ICEpower 200AC & 200ASC Review (Class D Amp)

How does this compare to the IcePower 125ASX2 which is highly available at low prices today? 125 WPC into 4 ohms for under $150 for a single complete stereo amplifier module. I used one for a subwoofer application and thought it was very good.

I can't find this for under $650.00 US. Anyone have a link to the $220.00 one?

This is really horrible.

The nonlinearities are not smooth and are extremely dependent on frequency. I wonder how the intermodulations would look like. Again, an amplifier that would have original 'sound'.

Hello @amirm
I know this is an older review, but could you perhaps describe the behavior at temporary shutdown?
I'm using one of these modules to run a sub, and sometimes it seems it prevents itself from playing the lowest or loudest notes properly, but then it keeps going.
Is it a hard shutdown, or would it simply pull back?

Best regards

It's probably a designed-in limiter circuit in the module.

So that would present as a cut back on output when it detects its over driven, but it wouldn't actually turn off completely?

That's how limiters work. They limit output to a safe level for the circuitry -- or, in the case of active speakers, the driver(s) --rather than completely shutting down the module.

Sure, but I wasn't sure if it was a limiter or a protection circuit, or if I was just mishearing the response of the sub due to maybe not knowing the lfe material I was listening to well enough.
I originally had the same sub wired for dual-amp 4 Ohm with two of these modules, but one of the modules died unfortunately, but when doing this they would go into protect when pushed, at the time I assumed due to overcurrent. Now I'm thinking the box was faulty or the other module was, as the only thing the datasheet claims can cause a shutdown is DC on the output.
Since running only one module into a serial 8 Ohms, I encountered this behaviour exactly zero times, but the limiting behaviour seems to be as intended.

It's fascinating, but either way I need a bigger amp.

Thanks for your input

The 700ASC module is available on eBay for $150 at the moment. SOTA performance up to 1kHz and so ideal for a subwoofer amplifier.

Can't seem to find that deal on ebay, but if I really want to go that route, it's only about 250€ here in the EU.

The seller seems to be Emotiva. Make them an offer. I bought one from them for $124 plus shipping. I had it shipped to a US address for on-shipping to New Zealand. Maybe you could ship it to @amirm, he could measure it, then ship it on to you?

It would be great to review their newer design TPA3255 based IcePower 200AS2 (and/or Dual Mono 200AS1) boards. 200AS2 $165 USD and has 300W power supply onboard. 200AS1 with 300w power supply for each channel in Dual Mono would clearly be better. But I am more interested if the 200AS2 could do the job, be a better deal. I see that PS Audio uses it in their Stellar Strata, with their Preamp board connected to it:

Oh that's unusual. It does seem to be Emotiva. Wonder why they are selling these modules. They had prior plans for an ICE series amp line called EMERSA which appears to either be cancelled or on the backburner.

emotiva delays or cancel half of their stuff. this is what they said in 2013:
"we’re absolutely committed to making tube amps (and other products) under the Emotiva name, and they’re coming to our website in short order. You’ll see them listed under a separate series, like we’ve done with the Pro products….”

this was after they ended their partnership with Bob Carver.

Received my 700ASC. Looks brand new as the mounting holes don't have screw marks and the box (which was well packaged) had Emotiva tape.

Good to know. Mine is on its way, but it has a bit further to go!
