My impression was that the 24-96 version sounded more like a real piano than the 16-44.1 version but i don't really like listening to piano music generally and i actually preferred the tonality of the 16-44.1 version here (p = 0.01372). I did blind XY testing (i think i used deadbeef to randomly play one version).
I did a quick test after replacing my speakers and then the difference seemed more obvious than i remember despite my hearing having gotten worse since then. I would like to do a proper test but i want to get a better amplifier first (to rule out IMD caused by the amp itself). I did test for IMD later (with my old dynaoice dm-5 speakers) but it did not seem like there was audible IMD from ultrasonic frequencies with them.
My current speakers have TW29BN-B (beryllium dome) tweeters.
