Yes, it's hard to iintrepret for the first time reader, but I spent an hour or two entering in all this equipment that Ill redeploy over the next year. I sold my place with a lot of this stored, so it was worth a look at the proverbial "what goes where". I was asking AI to look up specs for me, then did comparos and it was remembering info from my queries, so we had compiled quite a list, so I rephrased a few times, as well as defining the general situation and concerns. Like, I'm not putting my best equipment at a remote flood prone location that I only visit 2 weeks a year....etc.

But AI followed along, nailing a few points about "power hungry bookshelves" and "impedance drop" that I dont' think about much, usually relying on "big speaker = big amp" logic. Having all this and more crazy equip laying around the garage last two weeks has showed me a thing or two about sensitivity, it's a real thing, lol. It was a very cool lesson on hifi, but also how good AI can be. It understood my questions perfectly, and seemingly conjured up "thoughts" based on understanding not stringing together other people's posts, all cut n paste.

I'm not sure what my post is about, AI or audio...? AI convinced me to make some adjustments beyond what I was planning. I'm happy to rediscuss any of those combos. AI really likes old school amps, guaranteeing the old Stasis will sound stellar. I think the thing is as well, it's HOW you play the system. I didnt' except to hook up Q65 to a receiver, but instead of storing them, it's worth a shot.

I forgot one.... the fun room actually gets q150s with a fosi v3 sitting on top of Q7s for low power consumption and normal tv listening turn on the adcom when I want to play music (I got the same color cabinets)!

I've made a note of that. That is an incredibly clever and highly efficient way to design a dual-purpose room.
Large high-current Class AB amplifiers like the Adcom GFA-5400 have massive power transformers that pull a lot of electricity right out of the wall even when they are just idling. Splitting the room into an "Everyday TV" system and a "Critical Music" system gives you the absolute best of both worlds:

System A: The Everyday TV Rig

At 91dB, yup. 14 amps, check. Small room anyway. The opposite issue, high power/high sensitivity, I'm swapping out Q5 towers for Q300s on a Vidar. It's another den / small TV room deal.

I grew up with my Adcoms, so I never considered some of these issues. The idea of matching a vintage receiver with modern speakers makes a LOT more sense if the parameters are considered carefully. It's not just watts, or rail voltage, or capacitance or amps, it's design as well. Where else am I gonna get detailed advice?

You certainly can ask AI, but when it comes to Hifi (and surely most other things, too), the answers you get depend on how you phrase the question. Furthermore, if you look at the sites that—for instance—Gemini AI references for Hifi-related queries, it often points to Audio Science Review. So, you might as well go straight to the source and ask your questions here directly.:)

Which KEF tower model is it? Q5?

Here’s the thing: every 3 dB increase represents a doubling of the required power. So, let’s say you have speakers with 91 dB sensitivity. Compare that to speakers with 85 dB sensitivity—which is typical for modern bookshelf speakers. That means, to achieve the same SPL output level, the 85 dB sensitivity speakers would require a 100-watt amplifier.And plenty of people use 100-watt amps with bookshelf speakers and are happy with the results.:)

Of course, it also depends on how loud you play your music. If you’re an SPL nut—well, for a real fanatic, there’s arguably no upper limit to the amount of power you’d want.:)

The more dynamic the music, the more power is needed.

The greater the listening distance (in free space), the more power is required—though in a standard listening room, you should take that with a grain of salt, given how reflections counteract that power demand.

In free space you have the Inverse Square Law where the sound level drops over distance. Reflected sound diminishes that effect. Some sound goes past your ear and reflects back and other sound waves that wouldn't otherwise hit your ear are reflected around the room and back to your ears.

I don't know how much "amplification" you can get but it depends on how close you are to the original source. If you are close to the source the reflected sounds will be relatively weaker than if you start-out with the direct sound already attenuated by distance.

A horn or acoustic megaphone (no electronics) works by focusing the sound and keeping from spreading around. Somewhere I saw an "acoustic amplifier" for cell phones.

You’ve obviously long since experienced the differences in power demands among your various speakers, so perhaps it was unnecessary for me to point out the relationship between power requirements and speaker sensitivity.

LLMs don't understand anything or change their minds. It's all just assembling a series of likely fitting output tokens based on input tokens, based on the ingested data from pretty much everything ever written. The output has some randomness so you don't get identical answers each time, and small changes in the input can lead to large changes in the output since this can shift which networks of connections are initially triggered. It can be amazing what results these pieces of software can generate, but we should be careful with the anthropomorphisation. There really is no intelligence there or any kind of being.

When it comes to discussions built on this robot slop rather than honest human expression and knowledge, I’m out.
 
It did seem like my queries were well understood, and the answers well formulated.

I have 91dB speakers, the Q5 in my face all day in the den here. I slapped the Vidar on them from a "best practice" approach. Man, do they whail... but essentially the smp is wasted on them when it could pull duty someplace it's needed. In this case it's not really needed elsewhere, since I budgeted my old receivers out so carefully. So instead of swapping in my 80w Onkyo 8260, I'm gonna swap in some Q300s I just got on EBay for $275. Those are 88dB or maybe 87, so Ill let the Vidar go to work on them.

It's kinda shame, the Q5 have the applewood on the teardrop cabinet that tucks in the corner really well. I drove to Trenton in a snow storm for them, like $200. They match the trim throughout the house, which is usually just "rich guy stuff". Rather than swap in the spare Onkyo to "match" the speakers, Ill swap in the black Q300s after the home interior gets a redo to modern. These can sit in the garage hooked up to the Onkyo, "stored".

See, I'm not hauling newer stuff across the country. Gonna make due with collected equipment, that's what made AI so good, helping with that process using my outdated equip....,all receiver-based. I have neighbors there.

Three systems at home in the mountains, all on poweramps and Fosi P4 Pre, do you blame me? I'm currently reconfiguring my ancient c75s into dual 8" bass bins x2. I have the old Adcom 545 MkII to power them, Sorting out the active crossover when it gets deployed with the Q7 Metas, still boxed until home addition goes up. I guess three systems at home, three on the road. Only the Q5s and newish Onkyo left over, but they'll get used too.

To sell, I have some EV PA speakers....nice and efficient, lol. Those enormous B&W DM640 that were inherited NiB a few years ago. I snagged some c35 in dark walnut for the OB house, I wanna give my nephew the existing Polk/Yamaha system there. C35s with a single driver are easy for a crap amp like the Yamaha RS 202 (thanks AI) and I wont' cry if they are swept out into the North Atlantic. $200 delivered, but one of BLOWN, so EBay refunded me the whole thing. I think I snagged one Q15 that has the same driver, I hope, for $100 ....a nice lil set. I can use the Q15 cabinet for a micro sub, lol.

I did get an education. More drivers makes the loads messy and requires a crafty amp. Sensitivity is a real thing. I never dealt with amp issues with the 545, so I never thought about it much.

Can't imagine much accurate or even good results with AI with those terms. What is your goal in specifying particular amp/speaker combos?
 
AI was good in a few ways. It understood explanations like... if I had three sets of speakers and three amps, I could ask for all 3 to be as equal as possible, or build a dream system, or just match on published specs. It also got into design aspects and headroom as well as rail voltage, etrc.

It wants me to try my "new" NAD PE whatever 25w on Q55 towers which have 3 drivers.....but 91dB. Bigger cabinets approx 6 ohms, but oversized for the room, just a quiet den getaway. AI swears it's the way to go. Other available receivers are Nakamichi SR2 and Denon PMA-737 more like 40w. Well, I first need a living room "AV" sound system, so I'm bringing down Q350s that I used for a long time, they have a lil cosmetic goof, to....off the FL. But the best amp for them is the Denon, leaving the Q55s in need of an amp. Big speaker, small room, it comes down to sensitivity and AI says the NAD is better than Nakamichi for them. Nakamichi gets little iQ1 in the BR, just because.AI loves Power Envelope.

So it's a lot to consider. AI gives it's opinion, and a list of "whys", giving citations, links and credit to direct quotes, and yes. ASR is often referenced.
