I am a bit dissapointed that one speakers distortion in 5Khz region is a lot higher than then other. Normal?

I think now I could observe a difference between the speakers. [...]
I hope this was a blind test! There's no way that I would trust my own hearing to discern this kind of difference if I knew at the outset that there definitely was one, especially knowing which speaker was which. Expectation bias is a devil!

The bad one was on the left for a while until I did the switch to right recently to make sure the distortions measured with REW follow the speaker. Thus, I could rule out room and amp issue.

Yesterday when I listen to more songs, it keeps bugging me that the vocals seem harsher than normal.

I thought maybe I should switching back the bad speaker to the left just now and it really surprised me when the sibilance also follow the speaker....

I don't know....Could 10+dB additional second order harmonic from 4Khz to 6khz shows up in sibilance.....

A resonance such as this (if that's what it is) could well be audible as sibilance. I'm not doubting your hearing ability, but the only way you'll know for sure whether you "really" hear it, or it's just placebo effect, is by doing a blind test in mono. You'll need to get someone else to swap speakers so you really don't know which speaker you're listening to. It's a fiddle to do such a test properly, but it might be an interesting exercise.

Of course the reality of all this is that, unless you can prove to yourself without any doubt that you can't hear any difference in a blind test, you will always feel that something is wrong, and you need to fix it. So we're back to doing repeated measurements & trying to get to the source of the problem.

In the meantime, since you've already reached out to the manufacturers, perhaps they'll show you what great customer service they offer & take care of you...

No response from manufacturer unfortunately. : (

Since the issue is about 10 to 15 dB difference in second order harmonics in the sibilance region, I would say even if I use my phone to record it, you should be able to hear a difference....No blind test needed for such big difference. : )

Oh, regarding my hearing abilities, I would say much better than average?

I could pass 0.5db online blind test and other online tests. See my screen shot here:

Ok. So one speaker has a definitely audible problem & measurements confirm this.

I still think it's worth running those simple tests which I suggested yesterday, so that you're absolutely sure that the problem lies with the HF driver itself & not something else (including the bass /mid driver). Those of us who fix things have all been there. We identify a problem, tear out & replace the supposedly faulty component, only to find that the problem still exists!

Pity about the manufacturer's lack of response, but maybe give them a bit longer as COVID is delaying everything right now. At the very least you should be able to get some info on availability of spare parts & how to actually get inside the darn thing!

Good luck!

I really hope the manufacturer will be willing to share tips to open up the speaker. As is, I can't even find a screw hole.....Not going to pry open anything on the speaker yet.

: )

Thanks for suggesting doing more tests to remove the bass woofer as the culprit. Since it have dual binding posts to do bi-amp, I can take out the connectors and connect speaker wires to tweeter only and run sweep again.

With speakers that expensive, I would not take them a part and risk voiding your warranty. This is a warranty issue, make them make it right.

Unfortunately, I bought them second hand locally, when they were about one year old. Warranty is only for original owner.

I made it clear to the manufacturer that I am not the original owner. I hope they would response regardless.

So sorry to hear. Unconscionable at that price point. It's their product they should at minimum help you trouble shoot what may be going on in order to protect their brand reputation. Particularly since resale value goes hand in hand with things like brand reputation and customer service reputation. I think if they do not respond you are free and clear to start naming names so other perspective buyers know what to expect.

Their auto response email said they are reducing their hours starting March 24 due to Covid. It would seems they are not doing so well. I will give them a little slack and hope to hear back from them in another week or two.

Thanks!
