I have done some of these modifications to my Hypex NC400s, and they have been running great for almost 4 years now.

Perhaps much to the disappointment of certain people, they do sound better than the stock product.
Which of them did you do?
 
This thread seems to have wandered way off the original review of the Hypex Nilai 500 DIY.

Perhaps a separate thread would be more appropriate to discuss the questionable practice of modifiying Class D amplifiers?

Class D amplifiers are complex beasts. A great deal of care has to be taken with circuit design and layout to achieve low noise and distortion. This careful design can be undermined by uninformed "hacking".

Voiding of warranty aside, there are serious safety concerns when poking around a device containing a 230 V supplied SMPS.

Capacitors can retain charge for a significant period of time after switch off. With nothing to limit the current to earth through a human body, tinkering with this stuff could have fatal consequences.


Also, none of these mods are backed by measurements. Who's to say that the claimed "audibility" of these mods isn't caused by the possibly deleterious effects on noise and distortion of the modifications themselves?

Why do museums exhibit perfect copies of artworks and why do owners of expensive jewelry often have perfect copies made to wear and use everyday?

Why would someone who truly values LPs and the sound they reproduce, play them over and over, wearing them out, or potentially damaging them, when he can make perfect digital clones to play with no degradation and sounding exactly the same as the very first time? He can play a perfect copy in his car, his phone, his HiFi or anywhere with no risk.

His perfect LPs may be quite valuable, rare and hard to find and potentially even more so if they've only been played perhaps once or twice...
 
44.1kHz 16-bit digital is far beyond the resolution of any LP.
In this day and age i would go for 24/48 because its probably default from my interface and give me slush margins for my terrible recording skills and eventual post processing.
And i would not spend time down sampling I have no storage space issues :) but yeah 12-13 bits with dither would cover the actual audible information .
 
You misunderstood me. I fully understand why someone would want to make digital copies of vinyl. Why you would encode vinyl at 192/32 however, is beyond me.....
While it is true that 44/16 is sufficient for human ears, can we be sure that the analog signals are properly anti-alias filtered before they were digitized? If not, sampling at 192 kHz will have the advantage that the aliased products into the audio band (upper limit 20 kHz) is >172 kHz (= 192k - 20k). After that, the rip can be safely down sampled to 44/16.

If you are hearing a difference there are two possibilities.

  • First and most likely, you are simply hearing results of perceptive bias. The changes are not in the sound reaching your ears, but are created in the wetware between them.
  • Second - the mods have actually reduced the performance of the amp to an audible degree. Either by crating audible distortion/noise, or reducing stablity to the point it is oscillating.
You are not hearing an objective improvement (lower distortion or noise) since the level of noise and distortion of the unmodified amp is already below the level of audibility.

I’m not going to continue beating the dead horse of a subject regarding online audio listening/testing reviews and how little they should factor into a decision. The only sad thing is how many people will watch such a review who have little to no knowledge/do not participate in objective forums such as these and make their decision based solely on such a video and possibly spend more money then they need too for their specific setup or requirements.

On the actual objective topic of the Nilai: fantastic measurements. And if you have the coin would make a great LCR or two channel setup, just like the NC400 for many years.

Are you planning on using an active crossover (basically having an active multi-amp setup) or just running the amps in parallel? There is really no point in the latter.

yes, you can use it. But. Bi-amping is a waste of time, effort, and money. It will deliver no audible improvements.
