Got this email today, for those interested. But not sure how much you are really saving with the tariffs.

I think that this is code for: we can't move inventory of our ~$1,500 preamp kits.
I think you hit the nail right on the head.

I have assembled a Hypex NC500 in the past. . .totally not worth it, not one single bit. The wait for parts, the time to assemble, with a minor risk of miswiring and blowing it up, all for a very tiny miniscule savings, arguably you can just buy a damn Hypex for the same price with warranty.

I highly highly advise against anyone considering assembling a Hypex anything.

But with 30% off, assuming no or minimum tariffs, this is a very nice preamp with dual balanced output. But ugly case.

I had the opposite experience. I purchased the Hypex Nilai 500DIY Stereo. It literally took me less than an hour to assemble, which consisted of turning screws and plugging in cables - no soldering required. On the Nilai, though, I don't think it is possible to plug-in anything incorrectly; if I remember correctly, the cable ends each are unique and only fit into their correct locations.

I enjoyed the experience, but kind of wished it was a bit more complicated. Later, I upgraded it with a second power supply to make it dual-mono. I enjoyed that as well. But, I understand that not everyone enjoys doing such projects. For those who enjoyed building models as a kid, I think they will like it. For those that had no interest, probably not.

I brought a ghent audio case, because the case that Hypex offers for the NC500 was butt ugly and paper cheap. The wiring wasn't difficult except it you want to properly wire the ground of the XLR, which is a bit more work.

AND, that damn thing doesn't have a remote trigger, so you have to physically walk up to the amp to hit the power button. That's utterly unacceptable, so I had to custom design and install a Wi-Fi power controller.

The entire experience was such a waste of my time and I ended up spending MORE money that buying one.

It sounds like they made some improvements for the Nilai. It has a remote trigger that works well with my WiiM. I haven't had any issues whatsoever.

But, DIY is not for everyone. If someone, like me, views it more as a hobby, then great. If not, oftentimes it is not worth the time.

I compared price on some Hypex products between Hypexdirect and Soundimport.
Pretty big differens on most of the products.

Is Hypexdirect trustworthy ?

Assuming you are not kidding, Hypexdirect is the sales shop direct from Hypex to end customers.

Before Hypex's 30th anniversary their preamp bundles were 15-20-25% off depending on how much was bundled (PreAmplifier, PreDIGin, Nilai500 mono or stereo, XLR cables). Now all their preamp bundles are 30% off.

I have one of the earlier versions that I built after seeing the measurements. It’s just okay. Functions fine, but uses a remote format that isn’t compatible with the Apple TV. It also making some weird clicking noises through the speakers when changing the volume fast. Sent back to Hypex and they returned it to me with new software that didn’t really fix the issue. SQ stellar otherwise, but lacking in convenience. Doesn’t feel worth the cost.
