In my opinion, and also logically speaking, more expensive may not always result in “better”. Trinnov waveforming may or may not be better than Dirac ART. Ultimately it would depend on individual use cases, as there are other factors, beside the software/technology.

Also need to keep in mind that one of the reasons Trinnov waveforming naturally costs more because of the well known effects of the ecomy of scale, Dirac must have sold millions of licenses of different versions.

If you’re referring to my APR-16, it has a full Dirac ART license. Sounds great.

Well I'm shocked. You were the one leading the charge against buying a Storm or Trinnov. What do you think a Trinnov does better?

I continue to be a fan of Dirac ART, especially given the value offered with the Denon 3800/4800. The relative ease of setup vs Trinnov is a big plus. But I feel like Dirac is a black box and I have more control with Trinnov. But it’s much more complicated to set up. For me that’s part of the fun. But I can see how many would be intimidated by Trinnov. The price of the Altitude 16 was just too much. That said the CI is much more affordable and I can use most any DAC with it. It also has a much improved user interface.

Dirac is not included. 3 or 4 people on AVS received theirs in the last week, I know one was shipped back immediately as faulty, will see what the other say soon.

I am the one that had to send it back. But they next day'd me a new one. And it worked from the get go. It sounds great. But we still have bugs. I have been so busy though it's hard to take the time to call them and go over them. I haven't run Dirac yet and no license in the box. Paid option. Actually though it is better at this early stage than my Emotiva XMC2 and RMC1 and RMC1L were at a late stage. Yes I tried all three of those at different times. I guess I am very forgiving. But the switching is better. Locks on quick. And is stable. But I am having some little audio glitches randomly that I can't figure out. I will be calling them about those. But right now other than the known Screen dimming to off at startup, Dirac has to be full range for all speakers before running it I guess. I think there might be one more little thing I can't remember. But it does sound good. And it switches great for me.ymmv though.

Could you also help test multi-channel decoding performance on your end?

I suspect this unit might have related issues in that area as well.

Can you provide some sort of Atmos test file that does a tone sweep in the top speaker positions? (Not sure how most of us can confirm this issue without a targetted test file)

You can verify whether the decoding functionality is malfunctioning simply by testing track playback using this Apple Music album.

I don't have Apple anything. It's hard to test anything with top speakers only. I mean you could shut off all other amp channels. I can't do that because of my amps unfortunately. I can't unhook speakers without blowing up each amp module that doesn't have resistance across the outputs. Goes to DC at the low end.

Actually I actually read the post you linked. When I run Dirac I will be able to tell. You would see the drop in the low frequency in the graph of the heights. I haven't paid for it yet though. I will probably sometime this week.

I am testing the raw audio decoded directly by Dolby, not the signal processed by the DSP. It is the unprocessed LPCM signal captured straight from the AXIS-16.

Normally, it should look like this screenshot. I tested different channels, and they should all align at the exact same sound pressure level (SPL) for proper decoding. This reference curve was generated using macOS's built-in Dolby Atmos decoding.

Any further evaluation or update. Is it pretty much stable?
