It has come to my attention that the response of a flat speaker measured at drum reference point (DRP) will not be flat. As a result, is an over-ear headphone with a smooth raw response at the DRP not desirable since it does include subtracted HRTF peaks and dips? There are many IEMs capable of producing a very smooth treble response at the DRP, but there are valid arguments that this does not represent the subjective timbre of flat speakers.
I am unsure what to think of this since specifying what IEM response is closest to the perception of flat speakers seems like a futile effort when you are arguing on the premise of a lack of external vibrations.
Since you cannot mimic the HRTF of the people in charge of mixing and mastering a song. Are you really any closer to what was intended by factoring individual HRTF features into an IEM's response?
Have the relative preferences of HRTF personalized IEM responses been compared to smooth responses when listening to stereo recordings?
