HQplayer - do I need it?

Don’t let the brickbats discourage you
What kind of creatures are those?

Which is fine if they only want to do it to prove to themselves . But not if you want meaningful discussion of results here and elsewhere . Which is likely the case given the OP .
Which is fine, i am encouraging OP to continue exploring the topic…

Without measures that demonstrate the "audibility" it is all suggestion. :)

No, I think this is backwards. Audibility is the final arbiter of truth in audio (the proof of the pudding is in the eating). When relying on measurements one still has to prove that the measurements are relevant, complete and interpreted correctly.

Of course (as we all know), audibility needs to be shown while controlling all possible confounding variables (playback levels, changes in listening environment and perceptual biases). In other words, audibility needs to be demonstrated in a properly administered double-blind test that is well-described and can be replicated by others.

I don't think it's placebo but I might try some blind listening tests with friends to confirm.
I definitely support testing things for yourself, but as others have mentioned, there isn't much to talk about until a proper blind test has been done.

It's really easy to hear things that aren't there (about half of the industry relies on this fact) and so you need to be very careful when investigating subtle changes in sound quality.

If you pursue this further, it's also worthwhile to record the same audio with the various filters so you can investigate what is actually different between them. @pkane 's awesome software Deltawave allows you to pull out the differences in an automated way, highly recommended if you continue down this path.

I think you might also need to use recordings instead of the live output, since as you note it takes 12 seconds for the audio to start using the super-long filter, and so it would be obvious to the listener what's playing, therefore not a blind test anymore.

The first principle is that you must not fool yourself, and you are the easiest person to fool.

If the measurements demonstrate that there is no difference or that the difference cannot be perceived by a normal ear, any response is purely subjective.
Even to taste two puddings you have to know which ingredients have been used because otherwise you choose the one you like and not the best one.
Good night :)

Do we really need another HQ Player thread?

Yes, wanting applying critical thinking, decades of scientific knowledge in numerous field is really a horrible practice.
Happy for you. :)
