How would you design a digital phono preamp?

Just ordered a waxwing and look forward to messing with it.

What features and capabilities does the community wish it had? Maybe a chip upgrade like the Texas Instruments AM62A? Personally I'm not sure about the need for more resolution unless it's for processing headroom.

I'd like to see something with expanded analog loading. Some kind of variable resistance to optimize the ability of the cartridge to present its best signal.

Also a USB out might be easier than a optical for recording.

I feel like studio restoration software like iZotope might find a new market space here. Say it has a DSD somewhere in the signal chain and audiophiles might be less queasy about it.

I think high end turntables ought to incorporate a space with suitable power for mounting Waxwing onboard: That'll allow for the shortest possible cabling from cartridge, plus reduced clutter.

à la iPod docking station, yes..a throwback solution for THE throwback replay medium.
Your invention makes sense, and in a sane world 'high end turntables' manufacturers would adopt it.
A more evolved solution might be a turntable with a Waxwing hidden in the plinth?
