I have a pair of Behringer Truth B2031A from 2003ish (previously in pristine condition) that had some kind of electrical fault a few weeks ago. I am not sure exactly what happened, it could have been a dip in the grid or long time stress on the components. Seemingly out of nowhere, three breakers popped in my apartment and the Truths were on one of them. When I reset the breakers, the speakers were outputting some kind of DC offset tone. Both woofers were sucked back and making a "Please make it stop!!!" noise.
I unplugged them, let them rest, disconnected signal, and plugged them in again to no avail. On power up, they went right back to that DC offset state and I quickly shut them off. I did NOT smell any vapors of the magic blue smoke. I took the amplifier plate off to see if there was anything obvious that was damaged. I am quite good at soldering so I thought if it were an IC or a couple caps, I could save them.
I tested the two big caps with my meter and they are within spec. Nothing looks to be cooked.
I am fond of these old speakers . I have them dialed in with DSP, a SB2000 Pro, hours of measurements, testing, and extensive room treatment. Because I use them for work and I was on a national broadcast TV deadline, I replaced them with the KALI IN-8 V2. RIP wallet .
Here's the thing. The KALI monitors are nice and sound pretty good with some mild DSP correction. But these Truths are built like a s*** brick house. Compared to the KALIs, they feel about 2-3x more premium in the construction. The Truths have almost no mechanical port or cabinet resonance, while the KALIs have far more than they should. Clearly, they saved money on materials and shipping by thinning out the front baffle and cabinet on the KALIs.
Blah, blah, blah.
I might try and replace the large caps and ICs, but another option, potentially, is to re-amp them with DSP. Keeping with price/performance theme of the Truths, I don't want to spend a lot on reviving them. I am looking for some options for amps with built in DSP (basic 24-48 dB/oct crossover, gain, and EQ).
What do y'all think? Should I cry and hold a funeral for these trusty Truths that have served me well for over 22 years? Or is there some option yet unexplored?
