HOw to minimal Hiss ? Pc sound still hiss. suggestions?

Ground loops can carry any sort of common mode noise - not exclusively mains hum.


PC's - especially their graphics cards - can create significant common mode noise, which can manifest as hiss, squeaks or buzzes etc.

Suggesting solutions without getting to root cause is just another way to have him buying stuff that doesn't help.

Embedded sound chips or most "sound cards" on PCs are not always great, and any analogue amplification on a PC is going to be prone to a) generating electronic hiss, and b) picking up nearby noise from being close to the insides of the pc.

For this reason, an external USB DAC usually helps.

But if you then feed that DAC into an amp that is itself hissy (as is clear from above), you'll still get that hiss.

My earlier point said that all parts in the audio chain add their own noise, so you can add hiss from the amp in the PC out to the amp that drives your speaker, but from the test done, we now know that it's the external amp that is hissy part, not the PC, right?

I think you are asking what do you need to do to get less hiss? The answer, as it stands from tests you have done, is to start with a better external amp that inherently has less hiss.

Just be sure the cable and the connectors linking the external amp to your PC is good - a bad (damaged/faulty) cable can cause hiss.....

When you say there is no hiss free amp, just to be sure i get your idea:do you mean that the amp itself emits noise or that the noise it generates will be coming from the speakers?

Yes. The same is true for mono chip-amps in active speakers. The speaker drivers make no sound without an amp (internal or external).
The first thing to do IMHO would be defining, where the problem lies - in amplification, in the PC itself, in a ground loop, external interference?
Starting from the unconnected amp+box (or the active box) and from there, adding one component at a time, to pin down the culprit.
Without this, it is like shooting at random in the fog...

Trying your luck by exchanging components may succeed (though it will be mostly expensive), but may also fail (in case of external interference). Testing "piece by piece" is the more rational approach IMHO.

the hiss is not reduced when i take the3.5 out of the DAC(or from the pc directly) same thing
Can I clarify the equipment you are currently using please?

When you say "from the PC directly" do you mean from the soundcard, or motherboard's, headphone jack or something else? Do you have an optical digital output (Toslink) as an alternative?

When you say "I take the 3.5 out of the DAC" do you mean that you already have a DAC? If so how are you connecting it to the PC?
 
Hi topping mini 300 is 230 dol. fosi v3 stereo is 119 . Do you or ANY BODY KNOWS IF FOSI V2 STEREO IS AS SILENT AS topping mini 300?
When you say crappy jvc. The are old yes. I not super audio quality demanding BUt I am Very no hiss or minimal Hiss demanding. That being said, would the eventual problem with the jvc speaker be that themself generate hiss when not music is playing but ready to play? or that their detailled instrumental quality would be average?

The Fosi V3 will be noisier, but it may be good enough - that is really difficult to say without testing it. Here is a comparison:

The left side of the graph is noise-dominated. The lower the amp is on the left of that plot, the less hiss will be generated. I own an AO200, which is somewhere between the Fosi V3 and the Mini 300. In a near-field setup, driving some speakers on my desk (efficiency around 87 dB/m @ 2.83 V), there is nearly no hiss and it's usually not audible at my seating position. However, as other members have noted, you also need a source/DAC with a low noise floor and you should make sure that the problem isn't some interference issue stemming from your PC. It's a complex topic.

Your JVC speakers won't generate hiss themselves, if they are passive. They are just not "HiFi" in the sense that their frequency response is probably not very flat, they can't deliver much bass at that size and they may show quite a bit of distortion. You can just use them and see if you are happy with the sound.

Yes, if you use an external DAC that is optically connected to the PC it will completely eliminate the PC generated noise.

If you use a wired non-optical method (e.g. usb) for connections you can also expect the PC generated noise removed to the point you can't hear it and maybe can't even measure it. However some electrical noise will leak to the DAC so we are in a grey area of just how bad the noise is and how well the DAC handles it so it is not an absolute guarantee.

I include a picture. the red and white join into a 3.5 that go into the pc. ignore the speaker on the right it is not in use

Nothing ican do about the speakers except return and find another setup , is that what you mean?

I put the specker volume to max and the windows sound at 80 pourcent. no music. mouse the screen and can not hear alteration of the hiss that is present

I tried to put the 3.5 in the cell phone same problem

Based on those answers, the problem is the JVC sound system itself (self noise). Not much you can do with that other than replace it with something lower noise.

(EDIT : or are you talking about the EDIFIER now? - if so, make sure you move the main eidifer speaker away from other electronics - including that altec lansing that it is right up against)

EDIT AGAIN - in fact here is another test for you. Switch off EVERYTHING in the room except the speakers, including lights. Connect your phone. Play music. Is there noise?
(This will eliminate noise coming from other nearby electronic devices)




What about the Edifier you have that you are thinking of returning. Is the noise from that also there with nothing connected? Or with audio from the phone?

Speakers can't generate noise - only electronics can do that. (including the amps in active speakers like the Edifier)

1) In your price range.
2) No self-noise (hiss) due to tweeter gsting feature.
3) Excellent performance (sounds great).
4) USB interface.
 
Maybe - maybe not. If this is graphics card induced ground currents then a DAC is unlikely to help. Galvanic isolation will be required.

As a cheap n cheerful solution I'm gonna be suggesting a bluetooth receiver. Cheaper than a DAC and fully isolated.
HI ant Im open to look at bluetooth receiver , what model not too expensive would you suggest and that would be needed before and after it? thanks
 
Unfortunately the info (I didn't bother watching the video) is probably tosh as DD converters are essentially snake oil. I agree regarding the earlier posts that there is value in using an optical Toslink to completely eliminate electrical junk being transferred between devices, and I would have suggested that myself except the OP was clearly on a budget and might not have a sound card with that output and also it is a 5.1 system which, possibly, might need more than a single coax output.

It is true that USB can transfer interference across ground wires but that is usually hum and other interference not hiss so, probably, USB does remain the easiest and cheapest digital connection for the OP.

Ground links are about mains hum. Not general hiss or clicks picked on local PC buses.

I may misunderstand the OP, but to me it seems he just wants less hiss (not said he has mains hum so far) - I think this thread is spiralling off into hyperspace! A simple USB DAC will work fine. DDC not needed.

Hiss is high frequency whereas mains hum is low frequency (50 or 60 Hz).

This thread is going round in circles.
I thought we had established, by test, that the hiss is mostly, if not all from the current amp.

If it were me, as I have mentioned, I'd get a USB DAC and put a better amp and speakers on the end of it. If this is too costly, I'm sorry, but I didn't invent the cruel world!

So, my last visit to this thread. :)

What firmware problems? The only issue I'm aware of is that the tweeter gating was initially overly aggressive but that was resolved with an update.

Are you in the U.S. or a different market? They appear to be in-stock for me.

Ah, it is important to distinguish between these so that are not trying to fix the wrong problem.

Mains hum will be a constant low pitched pitch 'hum' noise at a single frequency i.e. at the frequency of your mains supply. In the UK this is 50 Hz but is 60 Hz in the USA. If you say "Hummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm" at the bottom of your voice it will be something like that.

Electrical noise can be pops, clicks or other sounds but typically is a hiss covering multiple frequencies but much higher than a hum. If you say "Hisssssssssssssssssssssssssss" is not a single frequency towards the top of your voice that is what audio hiss sounds like.

Which of these do you hear from your speakers?
