How risky is running DAC direct to amp?

I'm in the process of searching for a new DAC. Originally, I was thinking I needed to find something--either a DAC/amp combo with analog volume, DAC/preamp separates, or XLR/RCA inline attenuators--that allowed me to interpose an analog attenuator between the DAC and the power amp, because:

  1. My amp is much too powerful for the room it needs to fill, and I would avoid a reduction in fidelity from running the DAC at, say, -40 through -60 all the time.
  2. Having an analog attenuator after the DAC could protect amp/speakers from a DAC freakout.

Having read some posts on this topic now, I think concern #1 is probably overblown if I get a DAC with a very good SNR (I'm leaning toward the Topping DX5 ii, which certainly qualifies).

Which leaves me with concern #2. I doubt there's any way to get valid statistical data on how often DAC freakouts occur, and how often they lead to hardware damage. My current DAC has blasted some variant of white noise through the system a few times, and everything's still fine, but I have no idea whether the signal was going through at a full -0dB.

Anecdotally, though, can the community give me a general sense of how much risk we're talking about?

There is no problem connecting a dac directly to an amp. As for the DAC failing and sending noise through the amp, that doesn't appear to be a common occurrence as far as I know.
 
I wouldn't worry.
DACs are designed to have about the right voltage out of the RCA or on balanced connections, to suit most amps or preamps with line level or XLR inputs.
For point #2, you could apply the same logic to any DAC, or pre-amp, or any device going wrong and blowing something up. I've blown speakers to bits one time simply by winding up the volume when the amp was driving speakers in another room and I wondered why the local speakers were quiet! I have never had an electronic failure that destroyed speakers, or indeed any more than the failing device itself, luckily, but it's not a bad idea to have speakers that are reasonably able to cope with your amp's output. You do need a volume knob handy though, not just as setting on a phone app. My amp has a settable max output - I'm sure more do.
 
For me, I would always have some form of volume control between any source going directly to a power amp without volume control. A simple but well-built passive preamp is a small price to pay for speaker protection, with no loss in SQ.

If its volume control is full digital I wouldn't hook it directly to a strong amp without some fail-safe guards.

It's not only about the DAC itself, a BSOD for example is sometimes famous about blasting a 0dB signal.

I essentially agree with you.

In my DSP-based multichannel multi-SP-driver multi-amplifier fully active audio system, I intentionally use multiple (actually four) HiFi-grade stereo "integrated" amplifiers as well as protection capacitors (for treasure midrange, tweeter, super-tweeter), not only because of the safety concerns like OP @Wunderphones pointed, but also because of several other preferable (at least for myself!) factors/functionalities.

We need to note (and to respect for) that analog domain tone controls (relative gain controls among the multiple SP drivers) give no effect nor influence at all on the upstream DSP configuration (XO/EQ/Gain/Phase/Polarity/Group-Delay). I believe that this is a great merit of flexible tone controls in analog domain. We know well, on the other hand, in case if we would like to do the "tone/gain controls" only within DSP configurations, such DSP gain controls always affect more-or-less on "XO" "EQ" "phase" and "delay" of the DSP settings which will leads you to possible endless DSP tuning spirals every time; within DSP configurations, XO EQ Gain Phase and Delay are always not independent with each other, but they are always interdependent/on-interaction.

Just for your possible reference, my DSP-based multichannel multi-SP-driver multi-amplifier active system has flexible and safe analog level on-the-fly relative gain controls (in addition to upstream on-the-fly DSP gain controls) for L&R subwoofers, woofers, midrange-squawkers, tweeters, and super-tweeters, all independently and remotely.
My post here shows you a typical example case for such safe and flexible on-the-fly analog-level tone controls. This my post (as well as this post) would be also of your interest.

Of course, I know well that I (we) can also perform such relative gain control using DAC8PRO’s 8-channel output gain controllers. I do not like, however, to change the DAC8PRO’s output levels frequently on-the-fly (while listening to music) due to safety and inconvenience concerns; I like to keep DAC8PRO’s analog out gain level always at constant -4 dB which should remain to be usually “untouchable” in my case.

One of the very unique aspects/features of my multichannel audio rig is that I fully utilize four HiFi-grade “integrated amplifiers” plus L&R active subwoofers, each of them have its own gain (volume) controller for safe and flexible relative gain (tone) control in analog domain even on-the-fly i.e. while listening to music.

In this perspective, my posts #438 and #643 should also give you better understandings. Furthermore, my posts #317(remote thread), #313(remote thread) would be also of your reference and interest.

Furthermore, for safety concerns, in DSP-based multi-amplifier setup, we should be also always careful enough regarding our "Startup/Ignition Sequences" and "Shutdown Sequences", as I shared my sequences at the end portion of my lengthy post #931.

The SMSL D200 features analog volume control and an analog output/buffer stage, making it ideal for connecting power amplifiers.
Alternatively, there is the Topping DX9 Discrete, which features analog relay-based volume control.
 
I would always prefer a volume knob and display. I am running a MiniDSP DDRC-24. The first unit got faulty after 14 month and came up with 0dB output volume after each power cycle:



However the replacment unit runs fine since than.
 
I run DAC direct to volume bypassed amplifier. I have no worries, it is a RME ADI-2 Dac FS. Would I run a DAC from a company where we have seen general hardware failures and poor software implementation in the past (not mentioning any names)? No, I wouldn't. So, my answer would be, it depends.
