How well can a 2ch setup represent the engineers intent if your 2 speakers aren't set up exactly as his.
True, but how far out can I be?
I know my 2-channel system is non-optimum in my room because the necessary listening position and speaker position to minimise exciting and hearing room modes means the speakers subtend slightly less than 60 degrees to my ears, but with my 5 channel system the "sides" are in the back corners of the room and I found no way with my Marantz multi channel pre to just have rears rather than sides and still use Audissey to get timing and FR "correct".
Anyway I do have some surround music recordings but the bulk of my records and CDs collected over the last 60 years are stereo (or mono...) so 5-channel is probably used once or twice a month with videos.

I picked the lowest category. All my speakers are from that category, since I bought used or at a discount (over half of my gear was purchased used.) I'd call myself a budget audiophile.

People spend to much on speakers, they don't have to cost a fortune to be great. Keep it simple that's all that's needed.

What’s “too much” and how do you judge this for others?

Too much is more than they have to spend. Aesthetic appeal obviously bumps prices up for the owner but generally, sorry to use that word, you can usually get away with spending a lot less. Especially if you not too fussy about buying new. Also new speaker prices seem to be over inflated for the sum of their parts from what they were sellong for not that long ago.

That works as long as you keep your spending on electronics to similar logic....not much use for the high end electronics really.

How much? anything over 10 grand sticks in my craw, but hey that's just me. With good sub(s) perhaps 15. This is pretty much based on what I know I spent for my current 2 ch set up. And I am never going to spend more. For speakers that is. "It will be shown that the most important component in sound reproduction are the loudspeakers".

Wow, this threads back to life. LOL
In the end I think it just boils down to how deep our wallets are at that particular time, plus if we're 2ch or multich folk.
I voted $3-5k cause that was the most I could afford at the time of my last purchase.
But in reality it boiled down to around $14k to populate my 5.2.4 surround rig.
So short of an unforeseen catastrophe or a massive windfall from the lotto, that's what I'll go to my grave with. ;)
