How dumb is this? It sounds great! (-15dB "manual preamp gain" in Dirac Live)

Well sure, but I think we can reasonably limit this discussion to a system where all else is equal except for sealed vs. bass reflex. In that instance, I think it's fair to say that the bass reflex enclosure will be substantially more efficient (up to the port's tuning frequency, of course) compared to the sealed one. Again, happy to be corrected though.

It will be more efficient in a relatively narrow band around the port tuning yes. But in this day and age many sealed subwoofers use DSP to alter their response. This means that while they're less efficient, they can (and often will) have just as deep bass extension as the ported subwoofer. So with both subwoofers playing within their capacity, they will have just as much bass.

This is exactly what OP is demonstrating. :)

But the speaker needs to stay sealed -otherwise, it turns into destructive testing, I'm afraid.

Such comments are uncalled for.
He asked a question. I answered it.

If you want to hack together some abomination to compensate for your systems ability to deliver good sound. Go for it. But don't then ask me if it's a good idea and then say its "uncalled for" when i point out its a bad idea.

Really? If you think that answer was appropriate, especially with it being your 3rd post in this forum, you are in the wrong forum.

If you think pulling down -15dB is the correct answer to good sound, then yeah, i'm in the wrong forum.

I suspect it's more about the way you answered.

This is essentially what many manufacturers do with small sealed subs and DSP: sacrifice headroom/SPL for extension. As long as the system isn't being pushed too hard, and it stays sealed as pointed out above, it can work just fine (as the OP reports). I don't think anyone is going to argue this is a valid strategy for a system that needs to pump out a lot of volume.

The way you answered was pretty rude and extremely unhelpful.

Dumb AF. Buy a real stereo system.
I see members have pointed out your less than helpful tone and you seem unrepentant . That's up to you but further harsh /rude posts will incur warnings.

You would do well to heed established members when they point out you are over the line . Thanks
