How Dangerous is AI?

The risks of AI are great, not in the sense that computers get smarter then us, but in the sense that our human stupidity becomes mirrored, automatised and powerful on a previously unimaginable scale. I am not sure that the likes of Elon Musk assess the danger in quite the same way.
Hmmm, this smells of luddites to me.

I think there is real need for concern with AI. It's not like a cotton gin taking jobs like the Luddites experienced this is a bit more technical and there is more at risk.

Agreed; but every new technology brings change. Unless AI dramatically ups its game in the near future, I'm going with my original impression: a bunch of billionaires with big investments and bigger egos want everybody to look at their shiny new toy.

of course it is. just like how the consensus was humans would die from asphyxiation if they traveled on a train at 30mph or more.

also, machine learning is not ai. machine learning stuff will not suddenly decide to infest robot machinery and build robocops to murder us all. Makes for good distracting news headlines though, rather than say reporting on 1% owning 99% of stuff and things like that ;)

That is funny! AI administering over thousands or millions of people could be a mess if errors occur.

good job then that humans humans administering over thousands or millions of people can't make a mess if errors occur....

tools are tools. there will be job losses, but, in the long run, not 'important' jobs. just a small step on the way to a post scarcity society. or something like that :)
There could be new developments creating new and interesting jobs offsetting those other jobs.

im certain there will be. or at least freeing up people from mundane customer service jobs to potentially do less mundane jobs.

The education level on average exceeds peoples' actual work demands in many instances today I think. Consider a coffee shop employee. They operate electronics that do all the brain work and free them up for more time making coffee. Or a machinist now with data entry on automated machines as compared to a old vernier scale on a lathe or mill etc used for the cuts. All examples of the evil computers at work.

How is it I still regularly run into people who have an education level below what is needed for very low skill mundane jobs? Lots of them seem to hallucinate too.

Haha. Yes, some are delusional and obviously have issues but most are over educated and where prepared for more. I've been hired for jobs that where boring in their simplicity and technical requirement. An example of employers over hiring and creating a underemployed issue which can be pretty unhealthy for some.

can one ever be?
+/- ndB?
Sure. If a person just wants to nail roofing all day for the next 30 years that's a occupation not requiring advanced sciences and such. An example. Or being a chef requires high school trade math etc. Somehow I am a bit miffed on the chef stuff because there are chefs with advanced degrees but wanted to be a chef and some chefs manage both kitchens and restaurants professionally and do it very well without an advanced education.

The problem is freedom of thought, knowledge and truth. If there is a machine that answers all questions, rightly or wrongly, it's not that important, for free an has the computation power to answer a question to every human being at the same time and many people start using it not just for fun, but to answer questions or write emails for their jobs, to get an opinion on some topic that's unknown to them, to come up with something fun for a conversation... one can easily see were that leaves.

I'm not sure. I think it is partly education versus job requirements and partly a persons attitude. Most who are over-capable for a job will get bored with it. Some others will find a way to make almost anything interesting and may come up with things to improve even mundane jobs.

When I was a electrical assembler of oil and gas drilling rigs and heavy duty wheeled and tracked machinery I was way overqualified for the job. I relied on my ability to pick out mistakes and correct errors for my entertainment. So I started with drafting wiring diagrams to correct the ones the engineering dept provided which where in error. That lead to me being the official main wiring loom assembler for the 24" water well drilling truck mounted rigs. Because I heartily made sure no metal filings or swarf got into my looms and made sure they where perfect in every way. That lead to being designated for assembling the control dashboards for some pretty cool big machinery. So something came from what was basically nothing before.
