hello,

i can give you some ideas of cost of Ml training and inference: you can crosscheck and look at prices at any large cloud providers.

1xA100 is more or less 10k\$ and it consumes around 0.5 kW, to make it simple let’s assume a processor is 350W and with memory and other required stuff 0.5kW

so…

1 server = 2 CPU + 8 GPU => 5 kW and the cost to buy is around 100k\$

for training a model: 1000 servers for 1 month
for inference (aka a request): 1 server for 10 ms to get 1word (x1000 for a 1000 words request) since LLM produces only 1 word (I assume the model is smallish and fits on the 8 GPUs memory)

Let’s go:

Training:
cost to buy: 1000 servers -> 1000x (8x10k + 2x10k) => 100 m\$ and you can x2 with DC cost, power, cooling, storage and fast network etc => 200m\$ story
cost to rent: look at AWS, GCP for cost of renting
power for 1 training LLM => 1000x10kW/h*24*30=7200*10mW/h=0.72 gW (for reference a nuclear power plant is 0.5 gW/h)
note that 10-20MW continuously is not a small colo more a large DC already.

Inference:
cost per request (1000 words) : 10s for 1 server
let’s suppose you want to do 1000 requests per second (Microsoft/Google are more likely in millions per second) => 10k servers
that’s very expensive.

ChatGPT sells and you can get the cost the 1k requests. I expect the caching effect to work very well (aka most people asking the same things).

that’s only order of magnitude. you also need the software to go with it, pay the engineers etc…

The human understands the meaning of the question, thinks about the answer, and responds. ChatGPT does none of that, but fills in the next word based on probability and pattern matching.
At this point we get into a philosophical debate of what it means to understand or think. On a functional, practical level, I say it may as well understand and think.

It's the old "chinese room" argument... which to me is stupid, because we accord some special pesudo-dualist status to human understanding and thought, without actually being able to prove our understanding of a language isn't just like the chinese room parable.

Birds will say "planes don't really fly, they just glide with engines attached to the back", but saying that doesn't get the bird across the Atlantic ocean in 5 hours. I'm concerned that people will end up like unemployed birds much sooner than they think, because they're using these simplistic statements to dismiss the (considerable) cognitive functions this software seems to have.

At a functional level, I've already said that computers may at some point become functionally indistinguishable from humans. But that doesn't mean they operate in the same way.

You suggested that humans operate in a similar way to ChatGPT, since both compose the next word sequentially without thinking out entire paragraphs beforehand. But this is a superficial observation that ignores the critical fact that we humans have a mental concept or idea that we then express in words. Humans most definitely do not select the next word based on pattern recognition or statistics. And ChatGPT most definitely does not have a concept or idea. It's a fundamental difference in how we operate, even if the results are indistinguishable.

That is how I see it too at this point. A really good search engine that takes out the fluff of current search algorithms. However, taking out the sources leaves you unable to evaluate how correct the result is about something you don't know yourself. Which is part of what is one of the larger benefits for searching. So it has to reach a level of correctness that is exceedingly high for us to trust it. And/or it needs to be really good and honest at saying it does not know.

Right now when it is wrong it reminds me strongly of a better than average intelligent person who won't admit they don't know, and are pretty good at slickly telling you something that sounds very plausible if you also don't know.

Agree. It's all too easy to trip it up with a Kantian antinome. These are unavoidable due to our way of differentiating and integrating our sense perceptions in the formation of concepts - something which ChatGPT does not do (and Kant didn't understand due to the time in which he lived). ChatGPT too easily confuses "epistemology" with "ontology" and thus falls prey to the reification fallacy with no way of "knowing" that it is doing so. When this happens it just gets stuck in an endless back-and-forth argument.

That being said, I'm coming around to seeing how it can be a useful tool by someone who knows how to ask the right questions. And it does force you to think about how to frame a question - which is valuable.

But it's still only "AI" in the marketing department.....

I'm not so sure this is completely right.

For Chat GPT to answer my query of "describe the water cycle in the voice of Cheech Marin", it needs to have a "mental concept" (whatever we mean by that in this context) of what a water cycle is, who cheech marin is, and what "in the voice" would mean. Either way, it seems to grasp concepts just fine.

And how exactly humans select the next word when they speak or write... I am not sure it would be wrong to call it a type of pattern recognition, or a thing related to that.

Actually, it doesn't need any "mental concept" at all. It just needs to be trained on a corpus that includes documents covering those topics, it identifies words in your question that match or have high probabilities to its training, and spits them out.

You are trying to redefine the meaning of "mental concept". It can only apply to beings or computers that have minds. We humans are capable of having a mental concept, and we are also capable of blindly following formal instructions and statistics. Being capable of both, we know that these are different cognitive states. We know that ChatGPT operates based on pattern recognition and statistics, not "mental concepts" because we know exactly how it works, having written every line of code in it, and built every transistor in the hardware that runs it.

ChatGPT can in some cases mimic what a human would say. It's quite impressive. But even if its results are indistinguishable from a human who answers the same question by applying mental concepts, it doesn't mean ChatGPT produces those outputs in the same way as a human. The mechanism by which it operates is entirely different from how humans think, even if the results are indistinguishable.

One might argue that the notion of a "mental concept" is just an illusion that humans experience, and everything that goes on in our minds is nothing more than pattern recognition and statistics. However, this is a leap of faith that is not supported by any evidence, and as it runs contrary to our own a priori mental experience, it is an unusual claim requiring unusual proof.

Was interesting to read your take, because I'm quite ignorant of philosophy but it makes sense there would be "prior art" in this field.

Knowing that you and several others in this thread are not on the hype train and worried Skynet will be here next week, I feel more at ease in the discussion.

The "AI" you allude to seems to be a single thing. Perhaps the human-level general intelligence. But plenty of software exhibits intelligence of a kind.
I've written software that embedded some advanced knowledge from Civil Engineering PhD's, for example. Programs written to be flexible enough can sometimes surprise you with results more sophisticated than you could produce yourself.

I think learning to interact with a relational database is quite eye opening in this sense. You can start adding "facts" to the DB and you can ask questions and get very good answers. All this with technology from the 70's. I guess it would not be considered AI since you need to learn SQL to interact with DBs. Still, so much we could consider smart can be "simulated" by deterministic searches.

Anyway, what I wonder is if there will be "an AI", and all intelligence converges to one, or if there will be several kinds of "intelligent building blocks".
Don't know if we'll see those anytime soon, but would be great.

As I understand it, he was forced out of a previous AI company. My guess is his ego has taken over again. He'll probably lose another fortune, but who knows.
