Horn Speakers - Is it me or.......

I still like the high section of the BMS a little more. And I like it's crossover point at 6300Hz better than the B&C 3-4k range.
Always tradeoffs, huh
Heh! I agree. The D2 also sounds different at high frequencies. It's practically enough for me to know that I can change the drivers if I want to; so far, I haven't had a strong enough desire to do so.

A buddy, incited by me, built regular simple, reasonably inexpensive (15 woofer in a box, 3 diaphragm, XT1464 on top of the box, ADAU) two-way speakers. He doesn't seem to be very fond of his Kef Metas anymore.

There is a lot to be said for well executed 15" 2way with a CD horn/waveguide. Something about that combo where things just seem to work better than you would think. Just going back to the Lansing Iconic or Altec's it's an old combo that has survived over time.

Rob :)

Yeppers. That't what I was into before getting the syn/MEH bug.
Here the xt1464 with bms CD, on 12" RCF mb12n405 (a beast of a 12" midrange).

Was doing a modular design to try different horns

All for use with sub and 100Hz xover. Another dual 12" mid cabinet design in left rear of pict.

I get a -6dB point around 32Hz in room with mine in the room corners to use the walls and floor to extend the horn as recommended by the manufacturer.
I get -3dB @ about 35 Hz. I've had them (~~2006 Klipschorns) in several rooms over the years, and the F3 does vary with the room, but we always put them snugly in the room corners. We tried various crossover points to subs, with 40Hz seeming to be the best.

Sounds great!

That's great.
I'm assuming you didn't test them all at the same time in this vertical arrangement, but one at a time, right?
What are your impressions and results?

These [posted by Audionaut] remind me of the JBL C34 with 15" D130 "extended range" I had when but a lad. The lowest portion of them had a "scoop," rather than a "box," but maybe those pictured above will get a scoop later. In any case they were fully horn loaded.
They had an F3 of about 40Hz, but only with about +8dB bass EQ (McIntosh C28, Bass tone control +2). They were just about as efficient in the lower midrange as the Khorns, and very clean, but really needed Bass boost. A variety of tweeters were available. A Karlson, with the same drivers I had earlier was similar, but there was a bass peak at, I don't know, about 125 Hz

Oh, here they are:

Thx, & sorry for the slow reply.
Yeah, I don't think they would make much of a line array, all playing at the same time, lol.

I had four low-mid double 12"s to set each one on, lined up horizontally outdoors for comparisons. All sitting on some subs.
It's pretty easy to crossover and EQ them all near textbook flat with FIR, and use the same xover frequency between the CD/horn and low mids .
There really wasn't all that much difference in sound outdoors, other than the off-axis rolloffs expected due to different H-V patterns. And even there it was close because they were all about 90x60 or 60x40.
Perhaps the biggest difference pattern-wise, is the XT1464 cuts off SPL faster outside the 60 deg spec, than the XR1464C.
I guess even pattern specs have an 'order/Q' to them. (I do like the XT1464 best indoors, for helping keep energy off the walls.)

What maked the biggest difference for all imo, is simply how well the quasi-anechoic EQ is done....
which I guess just equates to how well the measurements are taken and chosen, to base corrections on.
This matters most by far ime, and can turn any of them into either a sonic delight, or a turd :p

I loaned another friend an XT1464 and an ND1424BT today for initial experiments. They'll be working with a 4x15 dipole.

Here's 3 of the XT1464 on a fun, goof-type, rig.
I made the boxes splay angle optimized for smooth continuous polars when they are tight packed.
Angle just happened to fall very close to 40 degrees, so that's what i made them, giving a full circle from 9 stacks tight packed...
and cost me an effing fortune to build just for a goof. So I only built 4 stacks (not shown)

Talk about one powerful mofo....
The subs below the stacks were just stands for an indoor pict....outside would probably take at least 8 double 18's

^ Sir, you have a problem, a beautiful problem!
:D Cheers !
Yes Sir, big problem indeed.
Hey, doesn't everyone want to hear what a powerful 360 deg H by 40 deg V rig, sounds like ??? lol

if your power amps are noisy, and also reduces the loudness of any on/off thumps
Now I have Flex8 and Fosi V3s. Quite quiet and no clicks when turning on/off. DCX464 w\o L-pads and so.
