Large studios and control rooms, large consoles, custom monitoring, silver wire, then a fall into disrepair. It was built in a boom time for the province when it was not unheard to pick up rough diamonds off the ground. There was also a large casino there.

Studio gear becomes obsolete quickly, in parallel with a vintage expensive-to-maintain equipment pretty in the outboard racks movement. So studios need a continuous flow of customers to survive. The customers - musicians, producers, and labels - are also continuously changing, Your value is not your skill, but who of your customers became famous, which is outside your control. That is one of the failings of BOP. They built it and American and European musicians who becomed/were not famous did not come. That is why I decided at a young age no not to pursue it as a profession.

A nit, apartheid by dates, declined and would unlikely been in BOP Studios business years.

To related threads, on high end. Visual artists have an even worse marketing problem because they make one of a kind works, not 100 or 1000 of a kind. Artists market themselves on which wealthy collector or museum has them in their collection. A high net worth individual is going to require the audio dealer to sign an NDA which does not allow publicity.

Kind of depressing story, but not unexpected. I had never heard of BOP. Thanks for posting.

So wondering who had this idea it looks like it was paid for as a project of a government pension fund. That might be the more interesting story as to how that all occurred.
