High End Munich 2025 - May 15-18

Isn't the lower box the subwoofer?
Or is that lower box a cardioid effect box?

If by "sub" you mean under the traditional 30-40Hz of smaller towers, yes.
But not the subs we use to talk here.

Is just bass all the way to 20Hz.
If someone is willing to fill dips, etc is gonna need more subs (at the expense of stereo bass and AE probably though) .

Sorry it sounded excellent - I picked a particular challenging Radiohead track and it filled the room very impressively with excellent sub bass - no complaints
Don't tell me it was "Lucky" ...

118 pages and counting ( Leo’s excellent My Hi-End coverage) , what is this do you suppose?

I forgot to post some pictures of this €1 million system - given the size of the room it was in it had pretty impressive volume but I can’t imagine a room in any house needing something like this:

I took some extra picture of the cabling and the setup:

We can find so many noisy(?) cooling fans on the rear of the multiple amplifiers...:p

For the real/actual setup at user's home, I assume they will install the multiple amplifiers in the next room through wall-holes (or long cable-ducts under-the-floor) with perfect sound insulation treatments.

Which room boasted the most expensive collection of equipment? It looks like the competition would be fierce for this award. Ansuz/Borreson rooms often total to $2 million, and an esoteric horn/fancy finishes room at a show once boasted a $5 million collection.

Have you listened to these 8381a models many times?

I've listened to them about four times myself, and once at full volume. I don't think they need a subwoofer. But of course, if you want your stomach to really churn, that's a different matter.
You listened to the 8381 A at full volume ! That is - which SPL max? and how long ? And how is your hearing now ?
Sure they don't need a sub, excpt in a castle big hall may be.

I appreciate your passion for this brand but sometimes it's a bit too much...

Impressive overall. Very clean bass. The guy doing the demo pointed me to the spot eq'ed with GLM. Could seat there for a while. The quality of the bass struck me most.

They are not as ugly as they seem to be on pictures. View attachment 451629
Despite science I still can’t get over how far apart those midrange drivers are.

This MBL preamp…..

That display, the golden knobs, the used font…..

Thanks, I can hear very well. I don't shout when I talk. And everything is fine. I listened to music for a full 10 minutes on the 8381a models in the studio I visited.I'm not talking crap on this forum by the way. Just cold, raw realism. Realism in life is a difficult dimension for many to understand. I'm not looking for power, nor any glory, nor any financial gain. Knowledge is the most important thing when it comes to audio hobby. Seek it feverishly.

No cardioid effect or any cancellation is used with this model, according to people familiar with the construction.

But I will say that the glm software enables an even more dense and intimate rhythm of already accurate playback, which many other manufacturers don't seem to be able to achieve yet.

Unfortunately it is seemingly not capable of achieving a balanced off-axis and on-axis behavior at the same time. DSP capacities are impressive, and so is the general construction of the speaker, but I really do not understand why they have opted for such type of compression driver and narrow horn/coaxial design. It is inevitably leading to relatively broad dispersion in the upper midrange and narrowing pattern above frequencies the equivalent wavelengths reaching midrange diaphragm diameter.

I think I find this constant Genelec advertising show just as unpleasant as answers from ChatGPT about speaker tuning.

Yes, Genelec builds good speakers, but so do other manufacturers of DSP controlled active studio monitors.
Genelec has no monopoly and no miracle weapons.
I think Genelec gets such a good rap here, is a, they perform well and consistently and b, they trust to send many models to Amir knowing the speakers will be properly tested and assessed. So basically, they put their money where their mouths are and the product delivers the goods. I doubt many here know the brand personally, as I don't think these speakers can be bought in a trad HiFi shop. Back in the day, it's how I got to know ATC, as they had a few domestic dealers, as well as a then well established pro market. Genelec arguably don't need the domestic market so much and not sure that Adam now pursue the fickle domestic side now after being stunned how much more profit they could make from a domestic like with shiny enclosures... Having said that, they sent out an email to subscribers for such, showing the many colours now available...

There may be more, but how many UK dealers sell D&D and so on? Keith here, definitely, but any more? The high end dealer in London W1 I started with in a former life (for both myself and the business :)) is more Wilson, Majico and Martin Logan orientated I believe, so wealthy HiFi lovers (maybe music-lovers too) would never get the chance to hear what else is cooking at a higher level in the industry.

Dealers ( most dealers) are not keen on all in one speaker solutions, simply because you sell a pair of 8Cs and you ( almost certainly) never see that customer again, there are no ‘upgrades’, and of course it would mean learning something about acoustic room measurement ( REW) and what those measurements mean and actually making the trip to the customers house, much easier to sell the latest flavour of the month component.
