High End Munich 2025 - May 15-18

The most love-hate speaker I listen was the Elac with the strange tweeter arrangement.
I'm sure most of it was room but no meat on the hate side, amazing midrange on the love side.

If it's configurable down low I suspect is a nice one.

Aries sounded big as expected (footprint alone was enough) but too much horn for my taste.
Nice overall and sanely priced for what it is, MoFi, hints of impact are there even if it was playing at moderate levels.

I suppose bigger gear are of no interest judging by the thread climate.

Oh, and ESD was even worst than last year (cheaper though, strangely, it was close to $3m if I remember well) , I suppose that's the other side of Chinese gear.

Oh², unfortunately, Eversolo gear is smaller than I thought, nice looks though.

There are some cursory adjustments on the rear of the speaker.

New dac from Eversolo, and two integrated amps/streamers one of which accepts CDs.and the ‘Luxsin’ headphone amp.

It seems that this company has fixed two weaknesses of the Naked RS speaker by:
1. Adding twins 15" drivers which relieve the bass duty for the twins 12" drivers -> It will improve the bass performance.
2. Adding another planar midrange will improve the power handling and distortion in the 300-800 Hz region when using in a big room.

And how many visitors are actually using their ears?

I have always been surprised how seriously poor sounding systems in my ears (and backed up by measurements I should add) get high praise. Lack of references and AB testing lead to do some strange conclusions.

So I thought I would share some pictures of my experience of Munich so far.

I did spend lots of time so far in the headphone area and the more 'pragmatic' / sensible areas of the show, but I guess this post should be about proper high end, so I think first I would share the most 'sensible' (i.e. no nonsense) high end speaker (given the measurements) and just have a dedicated post about Genelec.

So, I was fortunate enough to arrive at a less busy time so I could actually ask for some music I am familiar with (Radiohead) and even chat with their team about the room setup ( apparently not much was required ).

So here are some photos of the Genelec 8381:

I hopefully persuaded them to try and send one to @amirm - and of all the companies I talked to they were the only ones on the 'crazy high end' floor ( other than maybe Elac ) that knew what ASR was about.

and some of the other Genelec Speakers in the room:

How did the 8381 sound?

Anything specific you want me to ask? Inpressins are mostly pointless IMO in these rooms
Oh I don't know, if you've heard other speakers a very general impression can be got sometimes... This Harbeth display (done by the distributor?) may well be 'Fidelty First,' but that should be combined with a tidy cable layout and not the hideous rats nest behind!!!

Those bloody bits of painted-wood made into stands selling for a grand or more the set are getting everywhere, with a 'story' to tell. People are lapping them up too I gather as they can afford them.

By the way, will there ever be a rational explanation for this kind of phenomenon that multiplies during these kinds of events? I would like to know who started this grotesque and ridiculous trend... Unfortunately, I noticed it in the photos of the JBL booth, which generally doesn't go for the exoti

In the UK, we had some expertly designed custom stands by 'Something Solid' which sold for between three and four hundred quid. A spaceframe design using solid rods (welded together so not always for fussy owners), we used to demonstrate the difference compared to heavy-type and box-frame stands. The chap who made them retired a few years back (Graham Audio speakers are photographed often, using these stands) and another maker of wooden types came to prominence, the ~£350 price doubling once the brand took hold!!! They've gone now as well, but this German firm has all but taken over and latest Harbeths in the catalogue now seem to be pictured using these. Only form of levelling is via slivers of veneer or whatever under the relevant foot.

Thanks for the pictures.
On that topic - hats off … asking a fortune and not even offering a somewhat tidy or beautiful rear side.
That’s amazing. Slapping a price badge of a new supercar to a system. And the moment you look at the back the competition in aesthetics and perceived manufacturing quality is an IKEA kitchen cupboard.

No young person will ever be attracted to spend money on a hi-fi system by visiting such an event.
Exhibitions and trade fairs always worked really well for me when I was young.

You are all far too strict with the high-end trade fair. It's a nice exhibition with great things.
You don't have to buy it and you don't have to do it exactly the same way.
But as a focal point for inspiration, the High End trade fair is unbeatable.

Maybe they really finished it in a hurry the night before the show opened?

Let’s hope it’s gold coated and not common peoples brass stuff.
