Wooow. Where did you get the fr graph for the new pads Sundara? Thanks for that.

Edit: now testing the parametric EQ data from the AutoEq procedure based on this graph with a week old Sundara (produced early September 2020) and I have to admit it sounds noticeably better to my ears than with the data based on the first graph (original pads). Thanks again.
Can nothing but encourage to pay for the filtering built by @solderdude specially for the Sundara (only one I tried) for taming the treble. I didn't like my Sundara at the Heresy until I received the filter. Simply exquisite!!!

That depends on the phone/ computer you use. Got to be worth trying without buying a separate DAC/amp. They arent hard to drive though.

And I would have thought one of the super dongles would be more than ample if PC/phone werent.

Found a loca shop where I can try Sundara and Ananda next week - my friend in China said he could get Ananda for almost similar price as HD660, is it a good deal?

Never heard the ananda and don't forget there may be import charges. But its a good price and the ananda gets good reviews. I'd prefer over a 660

The Revised pad measurements, were they done recently and not yet published on Dropbox? They are not (yet) in Oratory's list.

Here is Oratory's pdf for the Sundara with revised pads and his EQ based on them (which should be better than the AutoEQ one), from his Dropbox folder of all his measurements. Note these revised Sundara measurements were actually taken by Headphones.com, but they now use the same GRAS 43AG measuring rig as Oratory so I think they should be accurate. I would still like to see Oratory measure a new pair himself to confirm, as unlike the large majority of those posting measurements all over the internet, he's actually a professional acoustic engineer who specifically measures headphones as part of his job (as well as helping design them).

I have the HE4XX EQ'd with Oratory filters and really liking the sound. Great bass after EQ, mids brought forward. I would love to hear thoughts from folks that have used HE4XX w/ EQ whether it's worth it to get the Sundara or Ananda? I have listened to Sundara only briefly.

I have a hunch…that in fact the Sundara, HE4XX, HE400i and Deva all use very similar performing drivers, and it’s the pads that are the main differentiator between them. Just take a look at Oratory's measurements of them all below.

Sundara (original pads): https://www.dropbox.com/sh/654wxtmhlq0dhqa/AAD75QfJfKih_8QL-a1O9bESa/Hifiman Sundara.pdf

HE4XX: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/654wxtmhlq0dhqa/AAAB2SVYvAYTKwn44x3tcqZBa/Hifiman%20HE4XX.pdf 1

HE400i: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/654wxtmhlq0dhqa/AAD2c-oE5YmNovJZLa_foGLZa/Hifiman%20HE400i%20(preliminary).pdf

Deva (wired): https://www.dropbox.com/sh/654wxtmhlq0dhqa/AADPEKwIqSbIZcPdKwgHMiV1a/Hifiman%20Deva%20(wired).pdf

They all show dips and peaks in the same or very similar places, just in various amounts, and with different amounts of bass roll-off, both of which could be mostly explained by pad differences (pad seal being a major factor for bass extension of course). As they both use the same GRAS 43AG measurement rig, I overlaid Headphones.com's measurement of the Sundara with the new revised pads (thin green line), with Oratory's measurement of the Deva (wired, orange line):

These are very similar frequency responses. And I don’t think it’s a coincidence that it looks like the new Sundara pads and the Deva pads are the most similar of all the HifiMan pads, both having a ‘bulge’ (the pleather wrapping further around the edge to the ear-facing pad surface), and using the same materials. The only difference being the Deva pad’s slightly oval shaped inner ring that is not perforated like the Sundara’s, which could explain the minimal differences seen in the frequency responses above.

Now all this could easily be confirmed or denied, if either Headphones.com, Oratory or someone else with a GRAS 43AG has several of these different models, swaps the pads between them and re-measures. Until then I fully admit this is all speculation.

Hi
Is Ananda nothing but the same?
I think Ananda and Sundara use the same drive unit, it’s 80% thinner than the one in 400i I think. You can also see the tech specs from the hifiman homepage.

That's right, test locally, buy globally!!
Sometimes the local shop is willing to match the online price, it depends. I think there is also consideration of import tax and warranty.

Completely different drivers.

Are there any other differences apart from size?
Magnet structure dimension and structure? What I meant was that they are different in size hence not the same drivers. Not that they are completely different drivers. They are obviously very similar otherwise.
