Thanks for the review Amir! I too feel for the brave soul that sent these in. My condolences.
On the other hand, looks like I might have to purchase a new mattress.
(Sigh)

measurements are not even the first problem of HiFiman, the first being the build quality.
Totally blows my mind how an headphone that costs over 1 grand may break after 2 years or so.

At the price point the headless panther is the only adequate verdict. They should stay away from closes backs.

After the frequency response I wasn't sure why it had a headless panther. I mean it was poor, but not the worst I've seen and is EQ-able. Then I saw the distortion....

Seems to be a homage to the Sony MDR-R10 from the late 80s/early 90s.

Amirm made that point in his review.

There is deficiency in the 2K to 4K range but seems like that was intentional to try to copy the response of the Sony MDR-RP10. I expect highly colored response in listening tests.

I just wonder how much worse the distortion would have been if the frequency response hadn't drooped after 1kHz.

Stealth? Not the performance or industrial design. HiFiMan should have the test gear, or a lab to outsource testing to, or testing from their transducer vendors, to prevent performance fails.

Personally, I don’t think there’s such a thing as a headphone worth $5000. But this is a travesty at any price over $100.

Hifiman just doesn’t seem to know how to make closed headphones. I’m a little surprised that they released this into the wild at all, since they DO know what good headphones sound like. And I’m blown away that they are trying to convince us that this is worth flagship prices.
I would probably pay $5000 for the Sennheiser HE-1 (Orpheus 2) :D That one is built different (literally)

I really have trouble understanding Hifiman's product line. Total gamble on transducer performance, and they can't seem to settle on a decent suspension design even with their constant revisions.

They owner already correctly identified the headphones sounding bad and why. He wanted verification and sharing of the information with others.
I think that's generous, hat's off to him or her. Maybe better to focus on the generosity of the donor rather than their decision to buy the product.
