One question: the unit that AP call "SMPTE ratio (dB)", is it synonymous to "IMD" in Multitone and "IMD DIN" in REW, or is it synonymous to TD+N?
If I read this correctly, it's an IMD measurement, but the calculation method has lower noise immunity than other methods, so it gives a lower result when signal level is low.

Very good points.

Matrix data suggests hump comes from the Cosmos ESS ADC @IVX ?

@pkane and @mansr also see this hump with your Cosmos ADC? Measure a good low IMD non-ESS DAC?
Cosmos ADC IMD hump isn't really hump but you can find some nonlinear area on the plot.

VintageFlanker, yes, I'll prepare adapters soon. I did try Multitone but it wasn't accurate about THD+N.

I'm looking into it right now.

If it's the former, then how come my $100 SG3 beats the D90SE by 20dB at -60dBFS Generator level?

No )) You did find APx555 noise limitation, as usual, I believe. That's why AP's products IMO 10x-5x times overpriced. You can pay $30000 or as L7 in China even $50000 and you still can not measure $13 DAC's DR with the <10x error. Isn't it ridiculous?

As I recall, the issue with your Multitone test was with your ADC use of Windows volume control which was always reset by Multitone internally. Back then I’ve released an update that disabled automatic volume change, and in my testing REW THD+N and Multitone TD+N agree to less than 0.5dB.

Is this using the AM demodulation (ie. SMPTE IMD) which includes noise within the passband, or harmonic picking (ie. MOD IMD) which rejects noise except in the frequency bins of the relevant harmonics? If the former, do you see similar results with the latter?

ebslo, oh, regarding my sources I recommend you to check Cirrus Logic CS43131 datasheet and appnote kinda "how to measure DR with noisy AP analysers". They offer to make pretty much DIY LNA for that purpose and insert that before APx555, and this way they guarantee you can see the real AES17 DR performance of that $2/pcs DAC ;)
PS: my measurement results for Meizu HiFi DAC: AES17 DR =131db(A) THD+N@1kHz -113/115db(with some L/R difference but -115db is what Cirrus promised).

The measurements at the top of this thread do not included performance under load, which is what jasonhankjk is interested in.
Were the third-party measurements we looked at a while back under load?

I wouldn't know what to look for but thanks for clarifying his request. I'd say it's still all Latin to me ... except I still remember a lot of Latin. greek I guess. But I'm boning up and maybe I'll get there. Thanks for your patience.

Intermodulation distortion (swept tones)

That's not a notch. It's the effect of dominant H2 falling outside the measurement bandwidth. It's clearly at entirely unconcerning levels either way.

Similar on an Asus Xonar SE in loopback at 48 kHz:

I'd like to listen to my Sennheiser HD660S from my phone with a dongle, preferably balanced. So I'm having doubts between this S9 Pro and the E1DA 9038Sg3.

What are the benefits between one another..? To me a benefit is with the S9 Pro is that I can listen to unbalanced headphones too.

PS. Can anyone reccomend me a nice working 2,5 to 4,4 mm cable/adapter?

Here are the HD 660S's voltage requirements according to independent testing by innerfidelity:
1653144369471.png

The 9038S can deliver 3.28Vrms at 150Ω. That's enough for 117.15dB SPL with the 660S, so more than loud enough.
The S9 Pro in comparison can do 4.25Vrms at 150Ω. That's a 2.24dB increase in volume or about 25% louder than the 9038S.

This is the s9 pro measurement posted on the Korean community. Se output to 32 ohms load.

Been using this for about a month and am liking it so far, despite the pretty crappy ASIO driver for Windows 10 from Comtrue. It exhibits its own issues that most other ASIO drivers I've used haven't, such as RME, which is pretty frustrating at times.

Sound quality is great (especially coming from an old Dragonfly..) and can push my HD650 on SE to a pretty loud level.. haven't tried the balanced yet though.

Thanks for the measurements OP!
