Thanks for the review.

I am interested in knowing how PEQ works on it too. Hopefully someone who owns it will show us screenshots and share the user-experiences.
I am using Hiby R4. No complaints except its bulkiness. This Hidizs is very tempting.
Many years ago I owned a Hidizs player (forget the model number, probably their first DAP). I have confidence in this brand.

There’s reports on the effectiveness/accuracy of the peq functionality on headfi, check below

The top reason is that this thing has its own battery so you are not draining your mobile phone. You also don't have to multitask to get to your music. With a phone, you need a dongle which this replaces.

Some streaming DAP owners may want to disconnect from their phone without disconnecting from their preferred music service.

I was unaware smartphone owners could now 'disconnect' using a portable device called a 'Brick' to temporarily lock their phone.

Thank you for the review, @amirm,

Your review of this Hidizs AP80 ProMax puts the xDuoo X5 to absolute shame... at the same price point.
Your review is forcing me  to replace that pos X5 you had tested.;)

Looks like a very nice unit. Guess it might be useful to have that 2tb (unbelievable that much fits on a chip the size of a toenail!) if you're somewhere that has no 5G internet to hook up with Tidal. The battery is inevitable if you cut the cord with the phone.

Thanks for the review, Amir.

The 2 tb card might have space for FLAC music files from a 6,000 CDs collection. It becomes imperative, with such a large musical archive, to be able to quickly find the music you are looking for. A rigorous and editable indexing system and searchable list directed by alphabet letter of first initial (or better, first three letters, given the size of the database) of Composer, Artist and Album becomes a must. This might be hard to get on the small screen of the Hidsz and even in a larger iPhone screen. An iPad mirroring the Hidisz database could be an important element to improve the UI and use the Hidisz music player as a server for a home stereo system.

Per Hidizs website:
For the best performance, we recommend using up to 70% of total capacity to ensure smooth browsing and playback.
ADD:
Owners would be advised to visit Hidizs.net website to download:
1. PEQ Firmware [*Only for early first-batch units. All current AP80PRO MAX already include PEQ function—no update required.]
2. WindowsOS USB audio driver

I partly see the appeal of a DAP, but personally if I’m going to carry another device, I’d prefer to just take a small charging brick for my phone.

Per Hidizs marketing stuff, it supports HiByLink (like most HiByOS DAPs), which allows remote control through BT or WiFi, from another device running HiByMusic—can be an iOS, Android, or another HiByOS device. An iPad with HiByMusic will do.

Places that I am frequently in (intentionally [many that have no cell signal unless you use a satellite link]). It's nice when the only sounds are not those of a city scape.
And I can enjoy my music: moderately quietly.

Looks somewhat decent but it is disappointing that it has less power than a dongle that costs $100 less...

I don't consider the power output to be disappointing at all, more power = less battery life - I imagine this will be mostly used with iems and portable headphones - who needs more than what is offered with this device?, the demand for stupid levels of power is an absolute consumer meme that is akin to podgy car bores standing around their cars in a carpark and boasting of bhp figures

For me, it allows me to carry a useful device when a phone is a large, in the way device (because I am frequently where there is no cell signal anyway). To have the phone just to listen to music, when I can have something much more compact to do the same, just makes more sense to me. If you don't need it, don't buy it. But those trying to explain why not to use it to folks that have a use for it...is kind of odd.
At least you say that you understand the appeal but it's not for you.
But I wonder about some of the others.

This thing will play podcasts if I have a wireless connection?

Not directly, if you connect your phone then you could stream the podcast to the AP80 pro max using Bluetooth but you’d be better off with cheap Bluetooth iem’s for podcasts streamed from your phone

The low headphone output limits it's use as a DAP but it would be perfect for people who want to play their high resolution library on a vintage receiver without adding a DAC or networking stuff.

Some may also be interested, in such a PortableMediaPlayer, as the front-end of a vehicle's audio system. It allows many different configurations (Analog/USB/BlueTooth/WiFi) depending on the age of the vehicle and/or if they plan to use it in multiple vehicles... but only if they enjoy being their own DJ, with their own massive digital library.;)

I'm thinking inexpensive enough, 2Tb of storage, small, with usb out this could be a music server for my my new EV. Your thoughts, is something better I should check out? The car projects music from thumb drives on my screen and has android audio and apple car play.
