This is a new AES paper which is a meta analysis of many studies which sought to determine whether test subjects could reliably tell the difference between 44.1khz and so called "hi-res" digital. The conclusion was that there's a small but statistically significant ability to distinguish the two. In addition, test subjects can be trained to better identify hi-res.
Meyer and Moran take it on the chin!
The paper is freely available to non-AES memebers.
