Perceptive bias should only have worked if I expected and wanted them to sound good when I wanted and expected the opposite.
The mastering could be the reason, I recall reading long ago about always getting a master tape source etc. and the care they claim to take to get the sound right.
Either way, not what I expected and no, I won’t be hunting for any MQA files or discs, these just happened to be left on my DAP.

That is not how perceptive bias works - it is an unconscious and automatic process. It can be influenced by your conscious expectations, but it does not need to be. It can also result from unconscious filtering built from everything you have heard, seen, read etc regarding the topic. Or from completely unrelated stuff in your senses pre-filtering. Even when you are aware it is happening, and why - it is not possible to stop it.

But here is a thought experiment.
(Note - audibly perfect here means deviations between the master and what is produced at the output of the DAC are too small for our human hearing to detect)

PCM encoding delivers an audibly perfect representation of the recording.
MQA encoding delivers an audibly perfect representation of the recording.

If the master is the same (And assuming the DAC reproduces both encodings at the same level): Two audibly perfect representations of the same master (at least as far as the sound waves reaching your ears are concerned) must sound the same.


So that would leave the following possible explanations for your perception.

1 - Different master
2 - Different level (even small level differences not heard as a volume change can alter the perceived tonality of the sound)
3 - Perceptive bias.

The only way you can know for sure (assuming the masters are the same) would be to do a well controlled blind test. These are sufficiently difficult to get right that the benefit of doing them (knowing why you are hearing what you are hearing) rarely makes it worth while. Though lots of people here have done it anyway, myself included, - and found themselves amazed that differences they thought were obvious - disappear once they are listening without knowing which source of the sound is which.

I have never heard a good mp3 or aac. Even worse was dolby stereo.
The MQA files that I found on the sp1000 are a whole different ball game.
Don’t blame me, I wanted and expected them to sound crap.
They didn’t.
I don't know why you would expect them to sound like crap?
There was a whole lot of money invested in that ponzi scheme to entice the subjective audio community to purchase expensive new MQA compatible components and the new encoded music files of music they had already owned. Advertising & reviews were paid for that further demanded a return on the investment. If the music they were selling didn't sound decent they would just be shooting themselves in the foot.
It's a good thing you did like the sound of MQA since it is now a dead deal so the money spend on gear and music won't be completely wasted and hurt too bad.
 
Hi all, just joined, am a rather senior (old?) audioholic from Australia so my experience of this hobby will be a bit different to the people’s up north.
Have enjoyed reading the various reviews and forum comments and actually bought some bits based on them.
Firmly believe that while measurements don't tell everything about how a piece of electronics sounds, they do usually at least point to the quality of design and build in the equipment.
Looking forward to an enjoyable time here.

4 - Bitrate.

MP3 and AAC highest bitrate settings sound good.
 
Some years ago I was in the fortunate position of having all the Telarc 1812 album discs in every format available, mp3 at 320kbs, dvd audio, cd and sacd.
Being in the local audio club I had 9 or 10 members at my place.
Overwhelmingly, the mp3 could be picked from the other versions. And not in a positive way.
Dvd audio actually ended up being the format preferred by most members there. The cd was liked and the sacd was considered good but deemed a bit soft in its presentation, lacking a bit of impact.

ABX methodology (blind test) works for this. Otherwise, the perceptive bias against MP3 can unconsciously take control. It has happened to me and blind test removed my bias.

I live in almost the same time zone of yours, but in north hemisphere, in Chiba Prefecture, Japan, near Tokyo; I know we Japanese ASR members are much less than Australian people here.
