Currently running DT990 Pros on a pretty good amp, cannot suffer the lack of bass in these headphones any more. (Yes i've checked the amp and the impudence and all that and its eq'd but everytime the bass gets too much my headphones start crackling)

These headphones just don't have enough bass for me. I'm currently looking at 2 sets of headphones, the X2HR and Mezes 99 Neo/Classics (I actually don't understand the difference)
I plan on using this for gaming and a bit of music but I own Z623s so I'm not to bothered about the music part. I just want to know if there's that much difference in bass inbetween the two where closed back vs open back headphones isn't the main deal. I like my sound quality in the dt990s but yea the treble is deafening.

My chatgpt basically says, X2HR Best bass for open backs for $200 price while keeping dt990 type sound quality VS Meze Best closed back Bass for $200 while keeping somewhat good quality.

Just wanna know what you guys think is the move for me considering im coming from open backs and I do want noticeably more (preferably headphone shaking bass).

My main question is, do the X2HR's provide alot more bass than dt990s? And or should i sacrifice sound stage and just go with meze?

Also if you have any headphones that are around the same price and you think are better than these 2 choices lmk.

I've owned both, and I still own X2s. They are a great open back for bass but yes you'll always get a bit more punch from a closed back. Personally I prefer the sound of open backs and the spatial sense they do. And this is the polar opposite to what I used to like, it was more about the bass impact and seal and private listening. It's horses for courses really and what you want, why not have both, I have.

Another great affordable headphone with a lot of bass is the audio technica ath m50x, they sound good as well. I actually prefer these over the 99s. But everyone has their own preference. Just buy them all from amazon with the option to return and make your own mind up which you like the sound of. Don't be afraid to eq as well if they not quite doing what you want, that way you can fine tune them to your liking.

Thank you very much for your input, Since you've owned both of them may I ask if the X2s and Meze are in a different ballpark in terms of bass or? Like on a scale of 1/10 if you can.

Edit: also throw in the m50x on the bass scale too, I'm curious. Also why do you prefer the m50x over the meze?

None of these are really expensive headphones, you could buy them all on a return basis and choose yourself, which is the best thing to do. Getting someone's subjective review is actually meaningless but I will be polite and answer giving my opinion.

They all cover the hearing frequency spectrum well as far as I am aware, most proper headphones of this calibre do. The overall effect though is what I see as what people like or don't like so that is individual. Plus the equipment you use them with will all factor.

For me personally, I like the X2 and audio technica. The X2 are open allow you to hear most of your surroundings as well, but do a great job I think of almost being like listening to big speakers in a room. The AT are like listening to big speakers in a sealed enclosure attached to your ears, and you are less aware of the surroundings. The X2 are slightly more detailed sounding to me but the AT perhaps just a touch more neutral and realistic tonally sounding although both are good. The 99s on the other hand have that more cuppy sound I'd associate with closed backs. They're still good just not as good in my humble opinion. But we are again subjectively talking. You really are best trying these for yourself.

The other major factor is how they feel on your head and comfort. X2s are big, would you like that. So are ATs but they both feel very different on the head. One of my favourite headphones ever for sound is Sennheiser HD800S but even though lightweight I still don't particularly like wearing them for too long, I often just prefer wearing a very old set of PX200s with foam pads, leagues away from ability from what the 800s are capable of, but I can have them on for hours, all day even without wanting to take them off :) And they sound good enough with eq. The 800S though, omg wow, it's like listening to the recording for the very first time, in your own private space, as best you've ever heard it, even though you might have been listening to it for many years, regardless of what's the best speakers (or headphones) you've heard it on.

My score, X2 bass 8/10, AT 8/10 Meze 6 or 7/10. It's just my silly score and even though the AT and the Phillips score the same, they sound so so different overall. So scores don't mean a lot.

goodness this just got more complicated. I appreciate it. Guess I'm torn between the x2 and AT now. I'd order them on amazon and test them individually but I can't in my current circumstance. Do you really think the X2 is on the level of AT's Closed back bass?

It doesn't need to be complicated, do you want closed backs or open it's as simple as that. They are both good and of a similar standard, ones open the other's closed. If I only had to have one I think I'd have the 50.

But I don't even have the 50 anymore, I have the 40x now (slightly less bass and or big sounding but still excellent). I still own the X2 and still occasionally listen, love them they're great fun, but big. Better soudstage or perceived feeling of a wider sound field then, than the closed backs can do.

thank you, I ordered x2s.
Great choice, had mine for many years. Hope you like them. I love mine their keepers even though I don't use them all the time, I wouldn't part with them now. And to really confuse you now, I've changed the pads on mine. They're like a softer sponge mesh. I did like the orginal pads tho, and perhaps they sounded subjectively better with them on. But these new ones do change the sound profile a little bit but they just float more on my head now and are just a nice touch. And as I said with a bit of eq, you can alter the sound profile a bit anyway.

But what great headphones they are. And at reasonable cost too. And don't be itching to change pads either, I could have easily lived with the OEM pads, I just changed because I did, you know how it is :D

Got the X2HRs in today and did a bunch of tests, eqd and turns out it literally a tad bit more base than the DT990s, going to return them and look into closed backs from now on.
if the dt990s are a 5/10 on bass the x2hrs are a 6/10.

Closed back headphones:
- AKG K731
- Sennheiser HD620S

An IEM could be an option.. something like:
- 7Hz Salnotes 2
- Truthear Zero RED

Where are you located... this can help to make a recommendation

I'm in arizona, I DO NOT like iems, but your recommendations are interesting, I'm looking for the best BASS heavy closed back so how does meze match up to those?

I am sorry, I don't know the meze but the measurements look not good in my opinion.
Meze 99 Neo

I have an AKG K371 that I would recommend. I don't like the X2HR. But this is my personal opinion.

Looks like my options are now Meze 99 Classics, and Fostex T40RP MK3 with swapped pads.

If you want bass and can live with IEMs, this is what you want:

Goes down well below 20 hz with full response, incredibly low distortion, very detailed highs without exaggeration. I've got the X2HRs, don't like them on multiple levels. They don't go all the way down in the bass, have messy response in the high frequencies. Also have the AKG 371 headphones, rarely use them as they lack clarity. Overall, I like the Drop 6XX 'phones the best, but they start losing bass response around 100 hz. Nothing I've heard beats the 7hz-x-Crinacle Zero 2 for bass and clarity. And they are $25, shipped.

Are they really even comparable to headphone bass?
