Hello all

I am going to buy a new headphone but Idk which of two should I buy
I want the headphone for gaming, music, movies

HIFIMAN SUNDARA or HD560S

Both at the same price 195$, using FIIO k11 dac/amp, Idk if it is important but I will be using balanced 4.4mm cable + EQ for what ever I take
I don't know much about headphones and how to decide.

THANK YOU.

It depends on your subjective tastes and what's important to you. Hard question to answer. I have both. If you dont have a planar, get the Sundara. Personally, I'd get a cheaper dynamic closed back that I like better than both.

I haven’t owned a good headphone so I don’t know my taste yet

You need to find a store that has a headphone wall where you can audition multiple headphones. If you've never owned a decent pair, it will be impossible to advise. If you have a very flexable EQ option (parametric EQ or 10-band graphic EQ) it will be alot easier to pick something that ticks the right boxes. Because you can always mold the sound to your taste. The capability and potential of the drivers is the most important thing to consider, sound wise. The only thing I can say, is If you are a bass head, then don't start with an open-back. - If you like modern rock/metal/pop/electronic, fast dynamic/transient music, start with something that is consumer and professional friendly like M50x's. They are popular and a staple for a reason; and pad-rolled they are one of my favorites. FWIW, I strongly disliked the FT1 Pro. Again, you have to try to find a place to audition headphones to get a sense of what you like. - Weight, comfort, and ergonomics also come into play, and one thing may be more important than the other.

Just searched and my city have no such a store unfortunately, I tried EQing my hyperx I like clarity and neutral good bass Ik that hyperx is not as good as the headphones I mentioned but that is my capabilities:),

Both of those headphones are reviewed here and both are recommended but they are both a bit light in the bass.

but I will be using balanced 4.4mm cable
Balanced headphone connections are a gimmick. ;} Typically the balanced output is double the voltage (+6dB louder) but a different unbalanced amplifier might go even louder.
(Balanced microphone and line-level connections are more immune to noise but a headphone cable or speaker cable can't pick-up enough radiated noise to be heard.)

I don't know much about headphones and how to decide.
Headphone sound quality is mostly about frequency response but because of the way headphones interact with out ears we usually don't want "flat". So start with something that closely follows the Harman Curve and you can EQ from there.

Also see Understanding Headphone Measurements (video)

If you think you might want more bass, the "famous" AKG K371 bass exceeds the Harman target. (It has a regular unbalanced connection.)

These headphones exhibit fairly similar responses in that they both track the Harman target well.

The deciding factors here are primarily comfort and distortion, with the latter being of particular importance for EQ.

The Sundara exhibits a slightly sharper rolloff below 50Hz but their distortion performance toward the bottom of the audio band is also notably better, which makes them less susceptible to clipping when adding a low shelf filter.

On that basis, provided comfort and price are similar, I would choose the Sundara.

I have both and used them both for movies, music and gaming.

IMO Sundaras are better at music and movies. HD560 are better at gaming.

HD560 are light and comfortable. They don't need amplification as they are easy to drive, you may not need a separate dac. You can easily fit a mod mic. I run them off my Xbox controller without any issues. They do sound good for music especially with EQ and they are good for films.

The Sundaras are a bit nicer sounding imo, smoother and more luxurious, I find the separation better and the detail clearer but I have read they arent as good for gaming as they do t have any depth in the soundstage, not sure if this is true tbh. An amp is more likely to be needed with them. There are issues with build quality, my headband broke after a couple of years.

If gaming is your main use then the 560s if you plan on watching more films or listening to music then the Sundaras.

From a build quality comfort perspective the 560s win but that's not to say the Sundaras are uncomfortable as they are very nice to wear as well.

If you're gonna use them without EQ then I think the HD560s will sound better as there was a "New Version" of HD560s launched sometime towards end of 2022 (around that time) and it has somewhat better bass extension and less treble peaks than the original HD560s (Amir's measurements are based on the Old Version). I have both the New Version & Old Version and the New Version sounds really good at stock, and is my best sounding headphone used at stock. It does sound a bit better still EQ'd to Harman Curve but I'd recommend you go with the HD560s as it gives you flexibility to use them at stock and you'll get better bass and I think a more balanced overall sound than a stock Sundara.

Sundara or even better get a Hifiman Edition xs. Of course use PEQ

Take your time looking, considering. Most cities that had them don't have them any longer. My local BestBuy used to have a nice Magnolia department with higher-grade audio equipment within the store, and one of those walls: the store is still here, but those audio resources are both gone. The problem with those walls anyway is that behind the walls, the cables are connected to amplifiers that will generally be better than most consumers have or will be using. It would be more meaningful for you to be able to test candidates with say, a CD player they carry, playing your CDs, ideally, or music you know well. A good store with a good return policy is best so you can review the candidates with both your music and your equipment, in your home, over at least a weekend or even a Sunday.

I currently am trialing the Fiio FT1 Pro. I like it so far, but I have a week left to make sure. I've tried and returned HiFiMan's HE400SE and Edition XS. Most planar magnetics are too big, ugly, and bright for me, and this Fiio is none of those and will be probably my last planar try, regardless. This is mostly because I have been highly satisfied for decades with the dynamic drivers of Sennheiser 598s, in particular: I own and use two -one with balanced cables (first with a 2.5mm end, and now with 4.4mm). Over the years, I have also trialed and returned the HD600 -twice, and the HD650, once. It was after the first (surprising) 600 return that I got a second 598 several years ago, after they'd been discontinued. Other candidates since have not been better either -for MY equipment and tastes. For an even longer time, I have enjoyed my only closed-backs -Sony 7506, for which I have balanced extensions too. (BTW, one thing that impresses me about the FT1 Pro is that it ships with both 3.5 and 4.4mm cables -nice ones. But I can't recommend it or any other headphone because I don't know your tastes or preferences.)

Amazon is not in most of our cities either, but they ship to our doors for free and most of us do have convenient drop-off stations when we need them prior to that 30th day -again, for free. My next trial will be of a Fiio K11 R2R, by the by -arrives Wednesday. I'm planning it as the last round of my FT1 Pro trial as well. This will/would be my first -and probably only- headphone amplifier.

Enjoy your patient shopping and your music!

You may want to have a look at the new Fiio JT7

Very good headphones. And relatively cheap at the same time! +6dB below 100Hz and you have great headphones.

Hifiman is a piece of sh*t in terms of quality control. And unfortunately much more expensive models doesn't sound much better than the cheapest HE400 series. If you MUST for any strange reason buy Hifiman - try to find good copy of Sundara (open back one, NOT the closed back).

not sure what qc problems you talking about, but my sundara dropped on floor several times, still going strong 2+ years, replaced pads, changed dac K7 to K13 r2r, and it's a great match personally, i pick sundara for music more than hd560s now. Also a very laid back sound with ath-r50x, bass comes when needed, it's not bloated, and r50x is very good in FPS games. For music: sundara + r50x + hd560s, for competitive gaming: r50x, for singleplayers: sundara + r50x

When you say Sundara, do you mean the black model or the white one?
I’m asking because they have slightly different tuning. In fact, the white model is essentially a Sundara mk2
