Hi!
So I have been using the "legendary" JBL GX1200 for all my TR setups like Hovereze and Hoverback.
I am going to revamp my Hoverback setup and was looking into maybe getting some better woofers this time that are similar in weight to the barely 10lbs of the GX1200.
I thought the main specs to look at were RMS and xmax so I was looking at a few options mainly these ones:

Or maybe even this one as a last option as its heavier and I dont like the dual coils for wiring purposes:

But then someone told me this about the JBL compared to the first1 listed above (the SCS12S):
The JBL is slightly superior in almost every t/s parameter except for the Xmax so I wouldn’t expect any extra performance if any in fact.
Not sure how much you know about T/S parameters and I’m certainly no expert but these specs are the most important for HeZeBack applications imo.
BL - (motor force) weight of the ferrite magnet. Heavier usually means stronger and therefore better and more authoritative especially deep deep down low.
MMS - the weight of the cone itself.
Again heavier is better for HeZeBack and CD but doesn’t matter so much with CU.
Xmax - more is better but you have to have a strong BL to take full advantage of the extra travel.
FS - lower the better (resonant frequency)
RMS - both drivers are 250w but the JBLs Peak of 1000w is considered conservative.

So based on that info above, it seems neither of the 3 I looked at will be a good choice.
Do you guys agree?
Thanks!

No takers? :)

IME the enclosure has a lot of impact on performance. A great speaker in a box designed for a different speaker will probably not sound very good. There are online calculators for determining such things, but it’s a bit of a rabbit hole.

There is no really an enclosure foe Hovereze and HoverBack though. Thanks

The way that website provides ts parameters is not typical. If you’re looking to do an open baffle of sorts, I’d be working for a driver with a qts between .5 and 1.5.

If you have not already considered other ideas, there are ways to do this with shaker transducers and products like the SubPac. I often suggest the DBX subsonic synthesizer.

I think I am already pretty involved into the TR world :D

Which drivers did you end up using?

  1. I's my 1st DIY build (hovereze for HT, gaming, music)
  2. Upgrading from BST-300EX
  3. Seeking 4 low cost, high Xmax drivers: ex JBL gx1200 ($35 if they go on sale, else $65, rather than the more expensive ultimax)
Any good deals on 10-15" drivers?
