Hi Guys,

Long-time group observer here but first time posting here.

I'm moving my sub around my room and can't decide on the new location. Currently there are two options and based on my experience (2 days watching youtube videos and reading forum posts) I cant decided which position will be the "best". By best I mean the position which will allow me to equalize the setup using my receiver.

The graphs shown used the following:
SPL 78
Sub Crossover 80hz

Other info:
Front towers will be running at 80hz crossover (Can be changed, of course)
subwoofer ELAC Varro PS500 (16hz-150hz)

Good morning.

Please make a simple sketch(measurements include) of your room with the placement of speakers, listening position and possible subwoofer positions. This will greatly help with how we can assist you :)

You might try the REW (RoomEQWizard) software, it has a room model to help position subs.

I was unsure of what measurements you needed, so I made sure to include a scale bar in the drawing.

can't decide
Hi.
Can you hear or feel the difference between blue and red positions?
Can you upload .mdat?
The quality of the equalization may also depend on the receiver's capabilities.

recommended above may be of limited use for your room.

Moreover, if I understand correctly(?), these are the two locations that are practically convenient for placing the subwoofer. And we're discussing the choice of one of them.
I'll repeat the question: is there a perceptible difference in localisation and tactile sensation?
Next, you can work on speaker integration and room correction.
Perhaps a lower crossover (if the speakers allow it) will improve the results.

Might still be helpful IMO but if you only have two positions possible, then just measure each and choose the better one?
Agreed, but the question was more in regards to choosing one of the curves and which one would be easier/better to equalize later.

Of the two, the red curve is better. Why? Because it is more even, and it does not have that huge dip at 70Hz. That's not the end of the story though, you took a single measurement which represents the response at a single and very specific point in space. Your head is already wider than your microphone, not to mention you move around in your listening chair. So you are better off with multiple measurements around a listening area. Or you could do an MMM. Either way, I suspect the red curve would remain the better choice.

I'm not sure that red and blue will necessarily be indistinguishable in real life. But I haven't heard a decent system with a subwoofer in the rear for many years. And some people, on the contrary, place the subwoofer as close to the LP as possible.
Rotated the drawing to the "normal" position:

I'd look at the system as a whole. What does KEF (Q or R)900 achieve?
