I had a pair of the first generation of this model. Anecdata, but they sounded wonderful. However, to get the best out of them, they were greatly assisted by a lineariser plugin in the computer signal chain. It added too much latency to be convenient for me, but it had a terrific effect on the clarity of the sound. I assume the built in DSP on some of their models achieves the same, possibly with less latency?
I had like you the original Type 05 and liked the sound of them with the lineariser plugin. Although I bought and returned the digital Type 07 MKII as in comparison to the analog speakers with the lineariser plugin they sounded awful, like they'd recreated the lineariser plugin at a really low quality to run on their DSP chip or it could have been that in addition to the quality of the converters in the speaker. The digital MKII do have less latency with the lineariser on though, it's only 12ms compared to about 120ms (for the two ways) in the plugin.

I have the first generation Type 07 and it works flawlessly for 6 years already. The only real complaint I have on them is that the original paint is ****** and got gooey and is a dust magnet

They do new cabinets for them in the newer style with just paint. When I bought my Type 05 Series Ones only two years ago they were demo units and one was a brand new warranty replacement with the painted cabinet and the other the old rubberised style. HEDD sold me a painted Type 05 cabinet for only €100, so I'd imagine the Type 07 cabinet is only slightly more if not the same price. I also bought replacement tweeters for €70 each and they gave me a free new woofer too, so they'll be good to keep for another ten years as they don't rip you off with the part prices like Amphion do. The things to note are the waveguide has a slightly different texture on the newer cabinets, so if you get two of those as well your speakers will look just like MKIIs apart from the tweeter metal being painted white rather than metallic. Also the newer style cabinets on the Type 05 came with thinner absorption material about 2/3 of the thickness, so you might want to pull that out of your existing speakers and put that in the new cabinets to keep the same sound you're used to.

These are likely beyond my budget. But I had a couple basic questions for anyone who cares to offer their opinion.

Can the direct response be effectively adjusted to a more flat/linear response with just the bass and treble tone controls on the back? And are the tone and volume controls detented so they can be adjusted to precisely the same levels on two speakers?

I received the 05 Core Edition X.

They're magnificent. The black and gold pair perfectly.
I compared them with the 07 mk2s I've owned for two years.
I find there are noticeable differences when listening. The sound is more modern and open. The separation of instruments is better presented on the 05 Core.
The bass is well presented, clear, and impactful.
I wouldn't venture to comment on technical points of analysis, but personally, with my acoustics and listening position, my ears, I much prefer the 05 Cores.

I'm very close to ordering a pair of their big brother the Type 07 A-Core. I will most likely do so before the weekend is over.

These are tempting, wondering if anyone has experience re: hiss? Didn't see anything published that covered hiss/self-noise. As one of the people very sensitive to hiss (sit less than a meter away at me desk) I'd love to have more info on how these perform or compare to others.

Little less Hiss than 07MK2 for the 05 Core. But there is. Ok for me at 1m

OK, thanks for the info. Last new monitors I bought were original Adam A7 years ago. Nice sound, but hiss was borderline too much for me as I generally listen in what I guess would be "ultra" near-field, like arm-length away. These 05 Core look like a nice balance of features/price/size, looking forward to hearing more feedback as more people get their hands on them. I'm down to choosing either these, the Neumann KH80, or the Genelec 8030 for my desktop. Wish I could have a weekend with all of them to test. :)
