HEDD Audio HEDDphone D1

For example on Impact, a Focal or the D1 will have drastically more impact than an hd490 with producer pads, or other headphones which have a boosted bass and lower-mids. D1 has more slam (or at least quicker/snapier) than a HD6XX while having almost the same FR in upper bass and mids.

Sure - almost the same heavily smoothed FR measurement on a single measurement rig. I’d bet that all of these headphones would show different FR curves around 80–125 Hz if measured on an actual head at the eardrum, which would explain the lack of impact. Unfortunately, measuring that way is easier said than done.

So yes, we can’t know exactly how a headphone will sound (including impact, detail, layering, stage) based on a single graph - but at least we can use it to rule out the really bad ones.

So... does this mean something? Some reviewers said the peak in the 11k is a problem on their head, and the senneiser 505 doesn't have it. Instead it has a more desirable elevation in the air region. The rest is the same.
one should ignore everything above 6kHz. From 6kHz onwards the margin of error increases quickly and are looking at a mixture of actual frequency response, positioning and response of the testfixture (ear canal + pinna) in an unknown percentage.

Headphone meaurements are indicative.

I now like the D1 best when I just set a bass shelf, and leave the rest untouched.

100% !
But I still stugle to find in those data the correlation with for example impact and dynamic, or separation/layering. Two headphones can virtually have almost similar measurements and still have very different behaviour in those characteristics.

I am not saying it cannot be measured, just that I don't see it in the current set of measurements. Or maybe I dont interprete them well.

I read interesting theories but have no clue on the sientific research behind (bigger driver, angled driver, excursion...)
It's because their FR on your head will be 99,9% different than what you see on the graph, even if you EQ them to the same target using some measurements.

Headphones interact differently with our ears and heads. You can never be 100% sure how FR will look at your eardrum.

Also look at these headphones with so called big soundstages... it's always because of some FR irregularities. They are often too sharp too spicy up top.
Look at current hifiman offerings their tammed down treble a bit (arya unveiled, edition xv) and suddenly subjective guys called their soundstage not so big....

There are many other such examples where FR wonkiness gives you impression of something.

They sound amazing but god do they smell bad. Like someone chain smoked on them before shipping them to me

I've seen this comment about the smell a few times now...very strange.

I've also noticed a very interesting thing about the D1 over time: I don't feel the need to constantly crank up the volume to achieve that strange sense of listening satisfaction, unlike with almost all other headphones.

I wonder how they got this headphone to get planar speed etc, like it genuinely sounds like a planar driver. I’m guessing it’s the TPCD?

It just has a healthy amount of treble, slight tilt towards upper mids vs. lower mids, and no massive bass boost.

I have to admit that I didn't particularly like the D1 on this song. The vocals and guitar in particular sounded shouty.

It goes without saying that I've listened to this album on many different headphones.

And I have heard this album religiously and it always sucks tonally. the choices for mixing, mic'ing and EQ sculpturing made for an annoying sounding album

lol that is the album. don't go blaming the headphone for that atrocious sounding album

A negative test case Library ? these tracks should suck otherwise the test object has problems ?

The mastering might not be particularly good, but that’s exactly what the D1 emphasizes. And that’s the point
