Hearing test

Well, I have my hearing test in my hands. I know many of you were waiting on the results and I have them. I used to have awesome hearing about 8 years ago. Well, I now have very good hearing "for my age". FOR MY AGE!!! At 63 that was like a knife being stuck in my gut. What a let down. I may have to go into rehab from the shock.
My left ear is the best and really is pretty good. My right ear is like a 70 year old's. I basically have a 18db per octave filter kick in at about 10khz. By 13khz it is all over. My good ear goes up to about 15khz with no loss at all. So I don't need to waste money on great speakers. I can just use any old cheap junk and probably think I'm listening to high end Revels. I have had perfection for so long I feel like I have been gut punched. I'm now a one eared listener.

The real world example of this was when my wife said, the music on my 2 channel system sounded tinny and just bad on the high end. I COULD HEAR NOTHING TINNEY!! I went to my equalizer that I had added a lot of high end boost to and dropped everything from 13khz to 20khz back to flat and she said oh, that fixed it. That caused me to make the hearing test appointment. Well, I'm just going to have to adjust. At the end of the day, I'm just getting older every day. That is crime! I should take up drinking........

Don't despair though. Even as things look bad you develop new tactics and adjust, as long as you try. Pretty reliable cognitive thing.

I look at it as being lucky enough to live long enough to have poor hearing. Wear it as a Badge of Honor! There will be many more badges of Honor to come. If your lucky enough to last that long!

This pretty normal. I am 25 years younger but I can barely hear anything over 12khz. See it from the positive side: From 10khz-20khz it's just one octave

That is a good point. My current badges of honor are as follows:

1. 63 years old, check
2. Morbidly Obese, check
3. High blood pressure, check
4. Type 2 Diabetes, check
5. Prostate the size of an orange, check
6. Colonoscopy done, check
7. Ear wax removal at the hearing test, check
8. Ear hair trying to get long enough for a comb over, check
9. Nose hair trying to look like a mustache, check
10. massive male pattern baldness, check
11. Eyebrows trying to replace my lost head hair, check
12. Fatty Liver, check
13. Joint pain, check
14. Vision is mediocre with glasses, check
15. Officially proclaimed a human slave by two cats, but am surviving the slave trade, check

If I have anymore badges of honor, I might just win a prize! That last one is brutal though. They demand everything and expect instant obedience!

Well like the ENT specialist said while not knowing my background, "there is nothing above 10khz anyway". But I know he was talking about speech and hearing aid stuff. But he said you are way above any need for any hearing aids. Your hearing is very good for your age! I didn't let it show that I was happy it wasn't destroyed, but still sad that it was not better. All in all though it really was a great hearing report. I expected the worst.

I heard that it’s ok not to hear some diapason of khz, it’s just flexibility of your hearing during the different age
For example kids can hear a pretty high sounds
But I think now, when everyone have they earpods like 24/7, this statistics gonna get worse, probably I should get hearing evaluation soon haha

My hearing cuts of at around 12-13khz (see my signature) and I'm a little younger than you. Room treatment helped music sound better - somewhat. Hearing loss is more complicated than just loss, and the ability to interpret reflections as part just part of the music - as part of the room ambience - seems to diminish. At least for me. Things just sound less distinct and sharp.

What I found helped music sound better to me at the HIGH END (many are skeptical of this) is Dirac Live. I use it with a miniDSP. You may not have this option in your room, but I set it to be narrowly focused. Chair setting not Loveseat. The high end of almost all music seems so much clearer and more like I remembered it from before my hearing loss. A lot of people only use Dirac for low end, but I am very impressed with the highs. The company says in their testing people prefer full range correction too. It just brought a lot of pleasure back to the music for me.

Stick with that neutral EQ and I bet you find over time you adjust to it and quite like it...
