Hi,

I recently got my first Turntable and an old Mission Cyrus One Amplifier. The plan was to get some great speakers, but turns out my neighbours already get angry with my old speakers... so i decided to stay with them and get some good open headphones instead.
So my question is, how do i connect the headphones to my amplifier? Over the Tape-Out i guess. But i´d also need some headphoneamplifiert to get a higher power, right?
Got a pretty good deal on Sennheiser HD800s (500$) but they would destroy my budget pretty much haha. But i did some research and a lot of people who got way more experience been like "i wish i directly spend 200 bucks more and get way better headphones.
So which headphone amplifier makes sense in my combination?

Hi @analogadrian! Welcome to ASR.

Here are some great budget headphone amps for your purpose:
ModelPriceGain
JDS Atom Amp+$10013dB
Schiit Magni Unity$12013.2dB
Topping L30II$12616.5dB
JDS Atom Amp 2$13013.5dB

Since Phono signals tend to be low in amplitude, I would recommend the L30II with its slightly higher gain.

Though no matter which one you choose, none of these will bottleneck the sound of your HD800S.

Modern headphone Amps are just that good, even at this price.

With the HD800S you want a headphone amp with integrated PEQ. I suggest to take this into account for your purchase decision.

Adding PEQ to the system would cost another $100-200, with something like the WiiM Pro or miniDSP 2x4HD.

Highly recommended of course, but likely not within OP's budget from what I understand.

However, one can always add these later on.

Yeah, but the OP will not be happy with the HD800S without PEQ (at least I would not be happy). In this case another - much less expensive - headphone would have been a better choice.

Qudelix 5k seems like an obvious choice.

Get a resistive divider to use the speaker out of your existing amplifier.

How would OP listen to their turntable through the 5K?
Yeah, I see what you did there:facepalm:

Of course there is this:

About $200 for that and a Qudelix. OP gets eq, and a portable solution with bonus of being able to dance whilst listening to LPs on headphones.

While I really like my Qudelix 5K, this proposal is the maximum disconnect to analog audio from a turntable I can imagine.
I would assume that the ProJect phono preamp is not the most capable device...
