Now I'm wondering what's the evolutionary reason behind such a gigantic range.

generally ascribed to finding a freq. "slot" that is not "polluted" with some other species songs

I 'observed' my feral capture for 2 yrs, from infancy to maturity, in the 'great' outdoors, where he battled daily to survive against coyotes, foxes, dogs and other cats, and then also to succeed (to a degree, at least) in catching mice, voles and chipmunks for food, though 2 -20F winters.
(He got along fine, but respectfully, with opossums...I think he shared their dens to stay warm...)
Being instantly alert to the movements of any of these would be a required survival skill, and a wide hearing range would go well with super sharp eyesight.
Today, 3 years AC (after capture) he still alerts to things in the distance that I can neither hear nor see, regardless of how hard I try, not to mention chipmunks nearby (yum, yum, he says...."they liddle mousies", above!)
I suspect that, to him, our music is nothing but 'more or less benign noise' - he sure treats it that way...at least compared to other (former) threats!

My now gone white domestic loved James Taylor. He'd come and sit centered on floor in front of me doing the sonar ears motions. If I changed the artist, or the xover was a bit off yet in design stages, he'd get up and leave.

For years, I put silly pictures on my lab report covers. This was one of my all-time favourites

Please note: I am not suggesting anything here; his is offered for humorous purposes only. ;)

Can we train them to do audio testing?

I think they train us.

For instance this grey tabby was considering adopting my wife and me. He looked over the house to make sure it met his standards, and when he was ready to leave, he scratched the nice leather chair in the living room. We understood what he was communicating and carried him to the door and placed him outside.

Apparently he was impressed with what quick learners we were, for humans anyway, because he went ahead with the adoption. He lived with us for the next dozen years or so, teaching us many other tricks. But that was the first one we learned, and he never tired of having us perform it for him.

He even took over as quality control engineer:

We called him Gandalf the Grey.

He gave up on trying to teach us to speak Cat, so he learned a few words of English. Just enough to verbally communicate his wishes when he chose to do so. For instance "cat food", sounded like "rate rude" spoken by Scooby-Doo on helium. "Outside" was "route ride". He was better with vowels than consonants; "cheese" was "eeeeee".

He also used to attack dogs that were on a leash. Wish I had photos, that was freakin' hilarious.

Magic, reacts to pigeons in Training Day (2001) Dolby Digital, cos he hears them often outside and watches at the window and he really believes pigeons wings fluttering and hooting on JBL control 12SR modified five screen behind the projection screen bed sheet, blind listening test.

One day I tried the bells again. Jenny tilted her head, listened, and started howling along, in total ecstasy. Klipsch La Scalas. Dogs know they're cool.

Which is the problem. Next time blind fold the dog so her personal bias doesn't influence her howling.

(joking, of course. great story)
