Hardware digital tone control?

Does anyone know of a physical product that is placed between the source and the DAC with knobs to change the audio tone in the digital domain?

I'd like to add some coloring to my music as my DAC hasn't got any filters that make any remarkable sound difference so such a product would be ideal to play around with,

That device works in the analogue domain and not the digital one so that's a no go.

Too large and rack mounted pro audio gear is not something I can accommodate on my desktop.

Two things, one is the RME is probably what you want or could be. So you replace a DAC. Not a big deal, plus it is an excellent DAC.

Secondly, don't be afraid of adding one ADC in the middle if it gives you what you want. I get wanting to keep it digital, but good ADC units are good enough you will never know the difference. For that matter following the DAC with an analog device of quality that can do tone controls would be just fine. There are pro devices that do that and not all are rack mounted. Finding one that is remotely controlled might be an issue.

BTW, what budget for this? What is your source of music is it a computer? Software on the computer might be the best way to do this.

I already have a Chord Qutest DAC that I chose over the RME and very happy with so it is not as simple as it may seem to just switch the DAC out.

No specific budget in mind but definitely no more than a few hundred bucks.

Strange to see there are so few products that meet my requirements. Schiit audio has three Equalizers and none of them work in the digital domain which I find quite peculiar.

it is a shame that pycamilladsp does not provide the possibility to set the tone controls. if it did, it would be easy to build physical knobs or sliders. @HenrikEnquist if you happen to read this.... or maybe there is another way?

The tone controls work by changing the gain of two shelving filters. The same can be done with pycamilladsp. Fetch the active config from the dsp, change the gain of the filters, and send it back to the dsp.

It’s like asking for a TV with physical brightness & contrast knobs. i doubt they exist but check McIntosh

Ahhh with get_config_raw() and set_config_raw(value) awesome! Then sure a diy tone control with a couple of knobs could be done.

It's easier to use the get_config() and set_config(), they convert the config to/from yaml for you.
