Happy Thanksgiving 2025!

Such a strange holiday....celebrating something somewhat mythical (i.e. between original illegal immigrants and native americans) that wasn't sustained.
Bastille Day, Guy Fawkes Day…

Most holidays are celebrated on an arbitrary day, or celebrate events that are sanitized or mythologized.

Argh! My Santa comes down the chimney at exactly on New Year's start.
But a good way to get back on-track... no more dog whistles, please.;)

... and here was me thinking this was just a nice thread to wish people a pleasant day for thanksgiving with their families, rather than debating the history of the date and origin. I do understand and appreciate the date itself can be a negative day for indigenous peoples.

Surely in 2025 it's just a day for family to come together really, most don't know the history... amazing it's so close to Xmas really. :P

Right, but some members are well known for stirring the shit and getting under others' skin.

As for me, I like our holidays merely for themselves. And in this case not to celebrate the arrival a bunch of religious kooks too extreme and intolerant to remain in their native country.

I noticed a neighbor was home alone, so I texted him an invite for our Mac-n-Cheese, he was over pronto.
Very kind of you, well done, that's what it's all about. *we need a thumbs up emoticon* :)

The actual history of the distinctly American holiday of Thanksgiving is extremely complex. This 'article' from some unvetted blogger:

Everything You Learned About Thanksgiving in the U.S. Is a Lie: The Real History and the Myths Behind It

seems to be rich in blame, but short of citations to back up the assertions made—leaving it to the reader to 'do their own research' to verify his claims.

However, one only has to look to the history of one of the indigenous peoples of the area around Plymouth Colony at the time

Tisquantum ("Squanto")

to get a sense of how truly difficult it was for both the indigenous people and the European settlers.

The USA versus the Canada natives history is so far apart and so totally different in the origin, the middle and the end that they are not even remotely related in any way, shape or form. Canada never went to war against them, attempts where made to pay them in coin many times, they refused and demanded beads and stuff like that, the British Crown eventually decided that they would make them subdue not by war and not by force but by treaties. They where bound by treaties and still are that they would keep the peace, not rebel against the Crown, receive social subsidies and live on reserves. Over history they received over ~$3.4 trillion from governance. That's ~$3.4 trillion from all governance plus they where moved up from no written language, only had stories, no metallurgy etc so where stone age technology into the modern age and their life expectancies nearly tripled to quadrupled. They now have full medical, dental, post secondary education that other people do not have and they get special "Gladue Reports" to keep them out of jails and they are still ~34% of the males incarcerated, ~55% of the females incarcerated and only ~5% of the total Canada population. They have so many taxpayer provided special socialist social support programs that it's just incredible. In Alberta where I live their children and teens are ~14% of the total children and teen population and they are ~74% of the foster children in the entire province. They are basically dependent on the state those that live on reserves and they want to be framed as "Nations" now when they depend on the state for all monies to operate and maintain their tribes, tribal operations etc and the social supports to live upon. Not nations in any way shape or form. When they are seen in the news with huge new industrial developments and they are shareholders etc it is all taxpayers money propping that up, being used for the lawyers to get to that deal and all the process was funded by the taxpayers but it is all presented to the public like they are shareholders etc etc. Without the taxpayers propping it all up they would be dependent on themselves. Frankly I have many many stupidly terrible experiences with them both male and female and they have treated me terribly all my life because they see me as representative to them of the "White Man."(I am white/handsome & not all of them but far too many of them therefore dump abuse on me and simply terrible stuff that should cause them to be in jails but they are not. Some of the stuff they have done to me is by far very very illegal and considered to be the worst.) and I am at my wits end with them and want to just avoid them. Totally different than the USA and we should not even think they are related in historical timelines.

Yes, exactly!

For the wider audience...

Seems some felt we needed to have some family bickering for the holiday and those posts have been deleted. A few posts got caught in the crossfire and have been restored. Let's keep to what we are thankful for (or at least to facts please). Thanks!

Best wishes to you and yours. I am currently thankful for loose overalls and elastic waistbands.

Kinda funny - this thread is a really accurate depiction of what goes on during a typical American Thanksgiving dinner! :D

I dear friend sent us beautiful flowers again for Thanksgiving and they made the coffee table instead of dinner table. For one of the few times in the last thirty years we are not hosting, historically 10-25 people. I just drove, watched football, chatted, ate and drank the classic and new offerings, and drove home with some left overs. No vacuuming, no dishes, no configuring a giant table. Woke up to these flowers and put some tangy vanilla yogurt on a slice dutch apple pie for breakfast, then snapped a couple of photos.
