Certainly no desperation as the Schiit Modius does its job quite well. Curious if any difference between R2R and Delta-Sigma DAC would be audible - nothing I could hear other than greater depth of stereo image. I have been looking for something to play with that does Airplay - as I occasionally need that convenience. Price is not terrible at all. Measurements are not state of the art, however, Gustard’s posted AP measurements are not really that bad. The SINAD looks disappointing at 88, but a closer look shows an astonishing lack of power supply noise below the 1 KHZ signal. The even and odd harmonics above 1 KHZ look to be the reason for the SINAD results. The multi-tone results look pretty good - noise does not rise significantly with frequency and stays below - 120 db. Gustard has a reputation of reliability and having it succeed at a firmware update with no issues is a positive sign.
Jury is still out on whether to keep it. It does add some features I desire, but it doesn’t switch inputs as easily as the Modius. Part of the “fun” of the hobby is to “play” with new stuff from time to time.
