Dave @AscendDF deserves a lot of credit for pushing back on Danny and being wise enough to send the speakers to Amir for a more neutral evaluation.
This one of Danny’s upgrades actually makes sense—repurposing the supertweeter as a regular tweeter, and then the original tweeter as a “fill driver” to boost frequencies at the crossover region between the woofer and tweeter. Creative solution.
I disagree, we don't know the distortion spectrum or power handling of that super tweeter and by lowering the crossover point it is significantly more stressed. I didn't like it the first time I watched the video. He did a similar thing with the JBL L100 where he dropped the XO point to the small (low power?) tweeter and I wonder if they've blown by now.
On the other hand I'm not one to tell people what to believe or how to spend their money, most have to learn the hard way.
The funniest statements that Danny Richie makes concern resistors. The ideal types of resistors for many speaker crossovers are ceramic coated wire wound resistors, which have great heat resistance. Danny Richie calls these “cheesy sand cast resistors” and hallucinates that they cause a “gritty sound.” Gritty because, I guess, sand.
I get that he wants to make money by selling expensive replacement parts, but in this case he is substituting components that are ideal for the use case with more expensive but inferior ones.
This does not surprise me at all. When I first got into audio I almost fell for his scam. Thankfully I resisted the temptation. He’s just taking advantage of all the newcomers. I really hope I keep seeing posts like this proving that it’s all just complete crap and he’s selling everyone snake oil.
