GR Research Speaker Upgrade Review (Sierra-2EX V2) [Video]

When looking more closely at Danny's KEF R3 Meta video I think he himself demonstrates a problem of his 4ms time gated measurement when it comes to 3 way speakers. One can hardly see the complete transition range making it hard to decide whether its good or bad and the resolution is very low here. In his picture it looks like the crossover frequency between midrange and woofer in 300Hz, however KEF spec claims 420Hz. Could be the spec is not correct, but typically KEF is quite good with specs, could be that Danny was fooled by his low frequency resolution measurement.

Unfortunately I could not find a good individual driver measurement of the KEF R3 Meta to proof one or the other.

Yup. All of this.

Sometimes, it is simply not possible to even begin to know how to get any rational point across.

And the reason soon becomes evident; that such people are so desperately armoured against reasoning that all attempts are instantly and automatically rebuffed.

They cannot consider an alternative (evidence based) viewpoint. They are too busy formulating more nonsense replies and further self deception, before the opposing point has been made.

It’s actually much worse in so many cases.

As you say, the ‘post hoc’ stance is unremittingly resilient. And the longer any such position is held the stronger the power of denial becomes.

If such a power were measurable I suspect it would be found to be runaway exponential.

I find the whole notion a little scary.

An idiot like this Danny guy is a really small element of a growing horror to me. With creationists leading the field at full tilt.
You cannot have a rational discussion with an irrational person.

I watched it. There is so much I can address in there. Should I do a video and do that?
I think a rebuttal video is necessary and appropriate.

I was going to do a rebuttal to Danny's misinformation, lies and just plain wrong ideas. BUT, it is not worth my time. I, Amir, JJ and a bunch of others have been through all this for the last 40 years. As I have stated many times, new people come into the audio world and always ask the same questions over and over. If they paid us to answer their questions and educate them on audio science , then it would be ok, but for free in an online forum? New people need education from the most simple idea up to the engineering level. You can't teach that online in an audio forum.
The best version of it I have found is ASR. ASR has many audio engineers, Electrical engineers and others very well educated in the field. They do answer some questions all the time but to do a real deep dive it is not possible. Sooner or later you have to realize that Amir has no dog in the fight and calls a spade a spade. He tests speakers and other audio equipment and tells you what he thinks based on TEST data. If you don't believe him or trust him, that is OK. But, he does all this for FREE. Danny's problem is summed up fairly quickly, he wants to play in the engineering field but does not have the education to do so. Back when he started he could get away with it but the field has moved on leaving him behind. He constantly makes reference to his thousands of A/B tests that are not good for what he is using them for. So, he is wrong thousands of times and doesn't know it. He makes provably false claims all the time. His videos are full of them every time. But to people with no experience or knowledge it all sounds legit. Danny just does NOT have the education to properly know what he doesn't know. Saying there are two sides of the issue Amir vs Danny is incorrect, there is an engineer with a provable knowledge base in the field and a speaker DIY tinkerer. You can't compare the two at all.
Well said.

@amirm

If there is a rebuttal video, I would recommend it be as short as possible and address only the top 5-8 lies made by Danny with an as-matter-of-fact approach.

Because the longer it is, 1) the more Danny can use it to help confuse the audience 2) the deeper the truth gets buried, all of that makes it easy for Danny to repeat his lies.

Brandolini law applies. No matter how much energy you'll put into it, you'll have to stop at some point and just bet on people's intelligence.

Very true. But it's fun blocking con artists and snake oil salesmen. :D

Which 'prediction market' should I use in this regard ? ;)

Doesn't seem like there is any point to a rebuttal, it all just fuels Dannys viewership. He will never find himself face to face with anyone who could correct his misinformation, in a public space, so the cycle will just continue.

100% agree with this. I've noticed that here as well with posts that counter some fallacy with a litany of questions. The more questions asked the easier it is to dance around answering any of them.

I think you all know this one:
“Arguing with an idiot is like playing chess with a pigeon — no matter how good you are, the pigeon will knock over the pieces, poop on the board, and strut around like it won.”

A shout out to Amir, Erin and proper measurements with a Klippel NFS. Yeah, the CLIO ain't the same.

No, seriously, the CLIO is NOT the same. :p

Danny and Ron put up a livestream video, during which they address (in part) this drama. Of course Ron defends Danny, and suggests that Amir had ulterior motives for testing the modified Ascent speaker. No detailed argument, just handwaving. While this isn't surprising, what frustrates me about the Danny/Ron tag team is that there is some deep relationship between them that isn't disclosed. Ron moved to Danny's town, bought a house from Danny, and defends Danny's every move. It takes away any suggestion of objectivity.
