Got Yacht Rock?

I do love that smooth west coast sound. Perhaps it's because I grew up there and my parents fed me a steady diet of Classic Rock.

The Eagles considered Steely Dan their main rivals for chart topping.

I consider the Eagles next level from Dan myself, and was never a big SD fan myself. Eagles had some real timeless stuff that still sounds good to me.

I live in Fort Lauderdale and we have more than our fair share of yachts around here as well as bars that cater to that community. I don't go out nearly as much as I used to, but I have been blissfully unaware of that "genre".

The reference is about relaxing in SoCal since many of those bands were West Coast. It's less about yacht bros.

I enjoy yacht rock quite a bit. Particularly when I'm feeling good and it's the weekend.

I prefer the Eagles if I had to choose but Steely Dan have an absolute ton of amazing songs too. I just bought Aja this week from HD Tracks. Wanted to check out my new JDS Element 4.

And I can't blame them. I found it annoying and was glad they got passed the most cringeworthy aspects of it (bunch of middle aged white people wearing captains hats, etc) and onto the music itself, which really brings back a lot of memories.

I like Steely Dan. The criticism that occasionally pops up that Steely Dan is overproduced perfection for perfection's sake ...well maybe there's a little bit of truth in that but it doesn't bother me. Steely Dan created good melodies, hired damn talented musicians and the lyrics are hardly considered middle of the road.

Regardless, it seems as though the duo's perfectionism reached a high point on their 1980 LP Gaucho. So much so that the track 'Babylon Sisters' was mixed 274 times before Fagen was happy to sign off on it. This specific track was recorded at Village Recorder's studio in Los Angeles, which, at that time, was equipped with a top-of-the-range Neve console.

I'm 80% sure there's a yacht rock show on one of the stations around here. It's definitely a mainstream term by now.

I also don't mind listening to it from time to time. Does Doobie Brothers qualify?

That programming has existed for years ala Jimmy Buffett etc. Also called adult contemporary or Easy Listening.

I've always considered SD just classic Rock personally, but it fits in the sub genre too.

hahaha tough but fair. I don't see anything wrong with music that is mostly just pleasant and unchallenging. I guess if I were inclined to judge people on their musical taste (I don't) and that's *all* they listened to, though, I'd wonder.

It's as plenty of what's considered soft rock does not fit into Yacht Rock catagory apparently. However, Yacht Rock does fit into soft rock I would think.

Also, the Eagles under Glenn Fry would qualify as soft rock, but I wouldn't put them there when Don Henley was running the show...
