Got Yacht Rock?

I was today years old when I learned of the term "Yacht rock." I had no idea that was a thing, and a large thing too. Watched a documentary about it last night, and learned a lot!

I'm not a wealthy man, therefore I refer to it as canoe rock.

I've never heard of yacht rock. I don't believe there is any such thing as yacht rock. I don't expect to ever hear of it again after this thread.

Well, it is definitely a thing in NYC Metro Area as well as the beach communities of NJ. County arts centers in metro area CT host Yacht Rock cover bands with some regularity. And bars at the NJ beaches have been having Yacht Rock nights for years. People show up with Captains Hats and Blue blazers. Great era of music and a cool vibe, even if you (and Donald Fagen, whose artistry I adore) don't like the name.

There's a Yacht Rock channel on satellite radio--it's my go-to!

It’s definitely become a thing in terms of radio format programming. I listen to the SiriusXM Yacht Rock channel in the car all the time. It’s come to define smooth, light rock with high studio production values.

I'm 80% sure there's a yacht rock show on one of the stations around here. It's definitely a mainstream term by now.

I also don't mind listening to it from time to time. Does Doobie Brothers qualify?

Yes, I watched that Yacht Rock documentary on HBO too. I enjoyed it!

That was the first time I'd ever heard that term, when it was recommend to me via algorithms.

And I can't blame them. I found it annoying and was glad they got passed the most cringeworthy aspects of it (bunch of middle aged white people wearing captains hats, etc) and onto the music itself, which really brings back a lot of memories.

You'd have to watch it and decide for yourself. There is some discussion about where some black musicians and bands of the time fit into the genre, they annoyingly and cringingly named Yacht Rock.

The Eagles considered Steely Dan their main rivals for chart topping.

I live in Fort Lauderdale and we have more than our fair share of yachts around here as well as bars that cater to that community. I don't go out nearly as much as I used to, but I have been blissfully unaware of that "genre".

To me, you just can’t deny it’s good music. Always puts me in a good mood. It’s become a pretty tightly defined genre and timeframe. Although, technically I guess I wouldn’t call it a musical genre.
