Got my little hands on the Purifi 10"s

Any idea when the Purifi 12" woofer is coming ?
That's the one I've been waiting on.

thats excellent.

My ptt10's are coming in a week or 2.

If the 10's turn out to be as good as they say then ill get the 12's and do 2 subs with quad woofers.

Purifi cabinets nearly done, just waiting for damping to arrive.

I'm going to stack all 3 and test them as a sub to see how they are.

If they do make a 12" ill get 8 to make 2 subs.

Just trying a horn. Once I am happy I will get the horn cabinet made which will sit on top of the ptt10. Compression driver is ND1480BE also very low distortion, ptt10 distortion being the lowest of this type of woofer in the world.
The super low distortion makes vocals and Speach the cleanest I have heard, this is listening to them straight after a session with kef blade which are great but the dynamic range here is on another level.

Not sure I understand the use case for these Purifi drivers given the cost … can you not obtain the same level of AUDIBLE performance for much less money?

Purifi drivers have significantly lower IMD and THD compared to the vast majority of drivers, and (without looking it up) I would say that for the vast majority of speakers, even really good ones, the measured distortion isn't actually below theoretical thresholds of audibility.

Given the small drivers this might not be a great example, but the LS60 (which I enjoy a lot) only manages to clear -40dB on THD measurements at 86dB. In the bass region it's worse. -40dB isn't smack-you-in-the-face obvious, but it's audible, and I think most people could pick it up in fast switching.

The Purifi 10" has distortion -65dB down (or more) above 100hz at 90dB... so it stands to reason that if there is even faintly audible distortion on a given speaker, the PTT driver will sound cleaner. It's an absurdly low-distortion driver. Link to datasheet (PDF)

I entertained the idea of building high-end DIY speakers for a while, and after doing some research I realized there were almost no serious alternatives if you wanted to minimize distortion.

Maybe, which did you have in mind? Satori 9.5 texteme? Which is more like a 9" but most importantly you don't have the linearity (radiation area deviation) of these or the ability to play as low and it doesn't have as good distortion characteristics or can play as loud.

The other would be 18sound 10Ntl3500 with tetracoil, it won't play as low. Great driver just in my application I want the option to crossover to a sub from 50hz to 100hz. And if i did go that way i would go with the 12" version, maybe 2 of them. Having had both and the 12 version i find (im guessing here, maybe another reason) because distortion being so low on the purifi i've never had vocals so clean.

Yes it is expensive compared to another driver the question is, is it better value to me and the answer it absolutely by a decent margin. Is it audible yes. Have i tried other drivers, Yes.
Is it cheaper then buying something off the shelf with the same quality yes over 10-30 fold.

With the dynamic range and polars going to around 900hz-1khz I am able to make an excellent 2 way with a single crossover. I dont need a giant horn where after 8khz the treble becomes diluted and now i need a super tweeter to compensate. I dont need a 4" compression driver to get it to crossover lower which will have breakup just after 10khz. Instead I'm good all the way to around 17khz.

here is a review of the compression driver i am using.

FYI I could use something like BMS 4594he and a large horn but I want a medium sized horn with more controlled dispersion where i dont need to worry about my first reflection point. In addition i would need to contend with minor problems with an additional crossover.

Looks like a very promising build, but matching drivers with a >20dB difference in sensitivity must be interesting! :D

Not according to results at Klippel, at least with real music. MOST people are closer to picking up between -15dB and -20dB, but a small number of people can detect -40dB. Even those detecting -30dB is quite low.

This isn't actually harmonic distortion (I think?) and it's not fast switching, but point taken.

On the other hand, we have to consider that some people probably took this test with a percent or two THD on top of what's in the test, I wonder if that matters?

Yeah, I'm not saying that is 100% accurate, probably for many reasons, but I do think MKR has a valid point.
On the other hand, all of the speakers that I have heard with Purifi drivers have sounded very good and I have a pair that I plan to use by the fall, so I am not a Purifi hater.

I use the 18sound 12NTLW3500 tetracoil - mighty fine drivers with a tight kick to it, but just not that fine detail that the Purifi's have.
That's why I am waiting for the Purifi 12" to come out so I can go to a 5-way system and use the 18sounds just for the kick drum range.

5 way sounds interesting.

Me too, it's really important I get kick drum right and then symbols.
