Having been closely associated with the development of GLM software right from the very beginning in the early 2000s, I figured that writing this blog piece would be easy. But keeping it under 1,000 words would be tough. There’s just so much...

The back story is simple. Over the years as far as the mid to late 80s, Genelec product specialists and design engineers had gone out and performed hundreds of control room calibrations. “Lunchbox” sized computers often called “barely portable”, were used in conjunction with full sized sound cards and ran the MLSSA acoustical measurement system for analysing the monitor response in control rooms and production facilities. These visits were of great benefit not only to the end user or facility, but also to Genelec who then gained a glimpse of how users set the monitor’s room correction DIP switches, if at all. We could also see what improvements could be made by moving the monitor, as well as properly adjusting those DIP switches on the back of the monitors – a feature included right from the very first Genelec models produced in 1978.

Genelec has just released an update to their GLM 4.1.1 Release Note (PDF).

There where firmware updates to my 8330A monitors as well as the 7360A subwoofer. The 7360A gave a loud pop during firmware update.

>>>Fixes in GLM Version 4.1.1
• Issue with 7200-series subwoofers is fixed, so connected digital audio channels can now be
removed from the subwoofer’s reproduction.
• Improvement to subwoofer level calculation.
• Improvement to check for software/firmware updates. If any update is available, the
notification message will be shown in the main page.
• Improvements for the MIDI interface, including a fix to prevent the UI freezing when using
the LoopMIDI application.
• SE7261 subwoofer system calibration bug is fixed.
• The SPL calibration starting bug is fixed, so the calibration process no longer starts without
the calibration microphone being connected.
• The max level restriction bug is fixed, so the restriction now works when the volume is
adjusted with the keyboard.
• The check for invalid characters is now added for the setup and group names, as some
characters are invalid for the file system.
• The USB library is updated to improve the system wake-up in Macintosh environments.
Improvement for both GLM adapter and USB Powermate devices is included.
• The firmware update feature is added for the following products: 8240A, 8250A, 8260A,
1238CF, 8351A, 1238DF, 1237A, 1238A, 1238AC, 1234A, 1234AC, 1235A, 1236A.
• The latest firmware files are added for the latest monitor models. Make sure that firmware
files are up-to-date to get all the benefits out of the SAM system.

GLM 4 – Release Note 12th Nov 2021

• The GLM adapter firmware update contains an improvement for the level handling when
using the 9310 wired volume potentiometer.
• The 9301A AES/EBU device firmware update improves the process of waking up from the
sleep mode.

Note: GLM will inform you if the firmware is already up-to-date, in which case an
update is not needed.<<<

I noticed yesterday that GLM 4.1 support MIDI. So any midi controller can be used to control GLM. I did it with a stream deck and that's working well.

I can control Logic, Reaper, Roon, TotalMix and GLM from the Stream Deck. Cool.

I have had the "Extended Phase Linearity" checked on 2 x 8351 since it was released. Now I unchecked it and and run a calibration. In my Livingroom it sound better without ELP - more depth, more lively, more open and dynamic. When switching between on and off in GLM it feel more "correct" with ELP on but also a little dull. Also I hear an increase in mid bass with ELP on which I believe makes the overall tone a bit darker.

One can actually see it on the Wavelet in the Grade Report.

That's my experience too. With EPL on it sounds more precise and focused. But without sometimes it is more fun.
