Genelec setups in living rooms [how to]

Went 65

Ah that's mine.

It's a 5.4.1 setup. Why not a 7.4.1 setup? 2 reasons; the layout didn't suit the 4 across the back and keep within the ITU spec; content is largely encoded 5.1 or atmos (where layout doesn't matter so much) these days so it better aligned with how we set the suites out at work.

Ideally the sofa would be 50% of the way into the room, but some compromise put it at 33%. 7370 is out of shot

Room response, RT60, and early reflections all within the ITU-R spec

I've moved again, have dropped the floor stands in favour of wall mounts and acoustic panels. It's a false wall and everything is behind the panels including cloud gateway, WiFi module and all the audio gear!

The setup is coming along nicely! The sound is absolutely sublime. A nice addition that occured to me is to use a fanless mini pc running GLM and a macro pad to control the system and have many presets available. Of course, I still need to do all the cable management and more sound treatment.

PabloT has an incredibly impressive bass range.I recently bought a 7380a subwoofer for my 1237a speakers, and it's a very capable subwoofer. But YOU! have two of them, WOW ! So your room must be rocking when you're watching movies. Congratulations on your awesome setup, it's impressive and stunningly powerful and very enjoyable hi-fi/high-end and movies.

Thank you very much! It is definitely overkill though. If any of you is ever in Guadalajara, Mexico feel free to reach out so you can listen for yourself. :)

Amazing setup
Just wondering why you went with 8351 and not 8361?

Mainly because I believe 8351 pairs better with w371a, but also because directivity is marginally better than 8361, specially when positioned horizontally. In my opinion, the benefits of the 8361 are lost when paired with w371 since they share the tweeter and mid driver.

I'm thinking of adding a Storm Audio ISP evo to add Dirac ART and some speakers on the ceiling to have true Atmos. But the truth is that I'm more than satisfied as it stands and I question if it would be worth it.

You're now, on my Hate List.

Wow!

I am in the process of how to decide to move forward on upgrading my home theater. I've mostly been looking at passive speakers and targeting new front mains to start with. I'm skeptical of active speakers because I worry they won't last the way a quality pair of passives would. Gelenec has a great reputation so I assume that is not an issue for them.

With that In mind what would be a suggestion to move forward here if I were convinced to go this way.

Something like G Threes R/L/C and one of their subs?

Or is it worth going to the G4/G5s for the fronts and not having to get one of their subs?

Or are the Home series not worth getting and we should target one of the bajillion studio monitors?

Appreciate any input you might have.

Looking to keep this upgrade at 6K USD or less. The rest can come later.

That's a tough one, honestly. Genelec for home theater gets expensive quickly. You will need a sub for sure. The g4/g5 still don't get low enough for the deep bass of some movies but you might still need them if you also listen very loud. They aren't as good placed on their sides (vertical directivity) so center channel placement can be harder.

Personally I'd be staying with passives for that budget. I own many genelecs because I'm kind of a collector and the lower models are lovely but just ok for the money. Genelec starts to really deserve it's reputation and separate from the competition at higher budgets with the 'ones' and GLM.

Unfortunately that gets really expensive to do home theater! I own a lot of genelec but 5.1 home theater is passive philharmonic audio HTs, a wonderful wide directivity speaker.

8350 has GLM

It does. At $2500 each they would exceed the budget I think. GLM subs are expensive too.

One could get 3x 8330a and a 7360a sub for
~$6k with tax. It will deliver very great frequency response and timing with GLM. It will be volume limited, especially on bass heavy content. The directivity will be fairly generic. I still like passives for that budget unless low/moderate volume is fine.

If there were a possibility of a $10k budget, get either a pair of 8361a w/no sub or 2x 8341a with the 7360a sub. This is where I think Genelec starts to have real value. You'd have to buy the center channel later so it isn't apples/apples. Still, the coaxial 'ones' would be a major upgrade over the other lower options.

Save some $ and don't get a centre unless >50% of your time is movies and 100% of that time is with more than one person so you're not the sweet spot for the phantom centre to work.
