Genelec Owners Lounge and Discussion

How does one quake proof these? I guess you folks on the East side probably don't have to worry as much as us in California
Yeah, I dunno. As far as I know, none of the Genelec stands screw directly to the monitor.
No acoustic treatment?
No. Can't in this space. That's why I rely so much on direct sound. Here's the curve and report.

Excellent sound response your room: As you are close, you are in the direct field of the speakers

Hi to all Genelec enthusiasts/experts?
Can you please suggest which speakers from Genelec are suitable for a dedicated home theatre of size 25 x 16 feet ? For LCR/surrounds and tops.

My humble system: 8020D mains on Genelec (K&M?) stands, 7040 sub, Oppo D 980H DVD/CD and Node 130.
In order to isolate the sub from the cabinet, I made a stand for it using some very hard foam rubber and a layer of sorbothane, all assembled/connected with some thin carbon fiber tubing.
At the sound level I am listening the system, you can't feel any interaction of the sub and the cabinet.
I am using a small Roku sound bar for TV and the system is music only.
I have enough excitement (negative) watching commercials on TV and don't need a boost from the sub...

As a data point I am running 2 setups

2.1 with 8351B + 7360A sub in a 20x14 room
Plenty loud enough for me

5.1.2 setup with 8341A L/R, 8351B C, 7350A sub, rest 8331 in a 10x10 feet room
Overkill for room size

You can maybe do a 8351B LCR, 8341A rears, 8331A heights, 7370A sub. This is what I would go for if I move up from my 2.1 setup

8361 LCR, 8351 or 8341 for the rest.
Iit depends on the distance and the sound pressure you want to achieve.

Amiable chit-chat for the Genelec Owners Lounge.
It's just that when I was buying studio monitors I found the Genelec's too expensive, and when I listened to them, they seemed bright and harsh. The Dynaudio's by contrast were warm and dark and ended up being perfect for mixing at loud levels without fatigue.

I briefly owned small Genelec 8010A's but didn't really find them good for playing music or anything else.

It's just that when I ... hmm ... nvm.

Mort.

1237/1238/1234a each sound completely different from 8361a.

I think most hifi enthusiasts would happily listen to these for long periods of time with a smile on their face, or movie soundtracks, if they had even the slightest experience of how special and beautiful the sound quality of wooden cabinet speakers is to listen to, compared to aluminum alternatives. Of course, the sound can be further tailored to your liking with glm adjustments. The accuracy in recordings is not left behind by the ones series.

8010a is intended for listening distances of about a meter. and of course optimized for computer use on a desktop. I personally consider this to be the worst Genelec speaker, and a good level starts from the 8030 C version upwards and with a subwoofer it is even quite enjoyable to listen to.

I was amused to study Genelec's web page for marketing 8381A Master Edition to home audio. The images are perfect in every detail, especially the decorative acoustic guitar and listener's hair-do. Are they renders or a photo shoot? Who knows? Doesn't matter much. But if it is a working system they did a nice job hiding the cables and source(s). The copy reads like the serious engineering-oriented firm straining the limits of their ability to add a few rhapsodic audiophile words.

I wonder how many homes have a system like that. Any? Looks like a rather small room for such powerful boxes.

There's also a web page advertising 1236 for home use but it seems kinda half-assed in comparison.

They may be unusual for Genelec and who they are, but compared to some of the Wilson Audio speakers, they are just of average size.

ivayvr.

Wilson Audio speakers are already children's TOY speakers compared to Genelec audio, if the master series is the basis for comparison.I would argue that the 1238a would be a good competition pair for a while and even with a subwoofer it would be quite a fireworks symphony, but the 1234a would already be in the mood for murder.

The 1235a is then completely dark madness when the sound remains completely under control and in place even with loud volume increases. The 1236a and blood can come out of your ears when the music plays and loud and very beautifully clear. The Wilsons should then be frozen in shame somewhere in a dark corner forever. And enthusiasts should move to Mozambique to be ashamed of their lack of understanding. This is how realism meets when faced with children's Christmas tree decorations and adults' real tools.

I may not have been clear. I was only responding to the "big speaker in a relatively small room" part. At no point I was comparing the sound of the two or trying to establish who should be ashamed...

Everything that does something the same must definitely be compared. It is a basic human trait, and it defines the understanding of development in every single person, and the benefits it brings to the old days. All development is based solely on someone making products that have more to give and produce joy, benefit, utility or even new learning with which human understanding rises to a higher level from more stone-age thinking.

If a person does not relate things, needs, ideas, or even price in products, a person remains an eternal slave to a primitive vocabulary and trapped in a certain value level. Everyone, of course, progresses at a different pace as understanding increases awareness. Some of us are, however, slow-burning human personalities.
