Genelec Owners Lounge and Discussion

hi !
I am new around here, and the proud owner of the 8380 that @patoulol shared the pictures above.
Thanks to him for introducing me to the brand , and helping me setting up those incredible speakers.
Obviously some trade offs had to be made in a living room situation as far as acoustic treatment goes. But I think the end result is pretty great already !
The modeling software https://hometheatermaestro.fr/en/index.html
helped me a lot moving the speakers around, finding room modes, finding early reflections, positionning treatment, and also sbir frequencies.
Together with rew, glm, and home theater maestro, and some help from @patoulol , I managed a great result !
Those are by far the best speakers I have ever heard. Precision, transparency, impact, power, precise imaging, infinite headroom… honestly it’s pretty amazing. Each listening session I am amazed and rediscover my favorite albums.

Here is the in room response after glm : 1/12 smoothing. Dip around 90hz on the left side is cancellation due to placement close to a corner. Not much I can do about it except heavy basstrapping ( not waf ! ).

the htm software helped me figure out i had strong reflections on the backwall, and treating that zone helped tremendously !

I know it is not studio grade perfect , but it sounds already pretty great to me…

Hey welcome!

I'll just get this out there...

We are all jealous.

Would be fun to demo that. I could demo a digital 83x1a 5.1 nearfield system in the WashDC area.

If you can visit a genelec experience center, it is most certainly worth it.

In fact, before buying the 8380, I was also hesitating with the 8351/w371 combo.
I took the opportunity of spending a nice week-end in Stockholm Sweden, in the heart of winter, to visit the genelec experience center!

There was two demo rooms, one atmos control room, with 8351 througout, and 8351/w371 as LCR.
IMG_3688.jpeg

And one live room, with the 8380.

IMG_3685.jpeg

Unfortunately, only one hour slot was available to listen, so choices had to be made….
I could have spent the whole day trying all the different configurations. But I focused on my application which is stereo listening in a living room situation.
I did not test atmos, nor did I test the 8380 with the 7380 sub, as there is no way for me to fit that monstrosity in my living room.

My wife was with me all time, we listen together regurlarly, so she could also give her opinion about the sound quality, but also the aesthetic factor…
IMG_3683.jpeg

I started listening in the control room, to test the 8351/w371 sub combo. I was interested to hear the cardioid bass, what it is biringing to the listening experience. First of all the acoustics of this control room is the best I have ever experienced, tone, intelligibilty, clamness, not overly damped, controlled reflections… it was insanely great !
The 51 and 371 combo gave me the best reproduction of stereo image, insane precision, details, pinpoint placement in space, sweetspot was pretty wide, and tone did not shift while moving around the space.
Obviously the 371 is doing an amazing job at controlling the bass, it was tight, precise, controlled, uncolored.

IMG_3684.jpeg

there was a light downward slope in glm sound character. I was honestly pretty sold. My wife had a slightly different opinion, she thought the sound was a bit too lean, and flat, lacking impact. She found it lacked a bit of excitement ,but at the same time she was impressed by the clarity, definition and great spatialization.
Also her opinion was pretty strong against the look of the combo….
Still I believe this setup is the best setup for studio and nearfield listening. The overall sound quality for a monitoring system is simply outstanding. And I think It could shine in a typical room, thanks to the controlled directivity of the Ones, and the bass module.

Then on to the 8380 .
Immediate difference, is the size of the sound, and the bass presence. The music fills the much bigger room with ease, bass immediately feels bigger with more body, impact and authority, listening to music become more alive, more energetic. Imaging is razor sharp and precise , and headroom seems infinite.
And most surprisingly, the GLM sound profiler was setup ruler flat...
My wife is conquered, so am I.
And she prefers the look of the ( much) bigger box.
In the end, I found that those two speakers fits perfectly for their purpose.
The ones, with sub gives you the ultimate in sound quality, transparency in a near field scenario.
The Mains 8380 is the ultimate in listening pleasure at real life room listening distance.
Thanks again to patrick from the swedish experience center for receiving us and the great demos !
Thanks to @patoulol for letting me listen to his mastering system and introducing me to the brand.
Back home I sold almost all my hifi gear I had accumulated over the years, and ordered my end game speakers.
I feel very lucky to be in the position to own such a great feat of engineering in my living room.

The Genelec distributor in Oslo, Norway, is selling their pair of Genelec 8380As, previously used for demonstrations, in a white finish at a good discount.
Send me a private message if you are seriously interested, and I’ll give you their contact information.
Note that I am not, and have never been, involved in the audio industry. I simply visited the distributor recently.
Also note that I’m fairly sure they do not ship outside Norway.

that would be a great experience !

Good post thanks.

Interesting observation about the 8380 vs 8361a. Cardiod in a damped room is kind of pointless, so it perhaps couldn't shine under those circumstances.

8380a indeed has a much bigger waveguide and maintains control lower which is going to help keep it clean in a larger room.

I've never really liked the ones as room speakers. I use mine nearfield as you suggest.

Erin at Erin's audio corner will be reviewing the 8380 with GLM soon.

I just asked Sweetwater for the pricing on a colored 8341a or 8351b. Has anyone ordered one?
It's an additional $400 per monitor plus 12-16 week lead time for the 8351b.

That’s a shame, and probably the reason why you see so few Genelec speakers in custom colors. I bought aluminum sheets for speaker mounts, cut them to size, had them bent to fit by a metalworker and colour coated. In total that cost less than 200 € (for 4 speakers).

Good afternoon from Scotland, everyone.

I'm just someone that appreciates well recorded music and listening to it on 'appropriate' (aye, that is indeed open to interpretation!) equipment; whilst I'm more interested in the musicality of audio paraphernalia I do have an appreciate and understanding of the actual science.

I've been perusing this forum for a few months now and acquired a pair of 8020Ds several weeks ago; 'as new' condition on eBay for £600 - they hadn't even been registered!

An SMSL D200 DAC soon followed after seeing the review here.

This morning arrived a pair of the Genelec 8020-320B stands and they've really tightened up the bass, something I hadn't fully anticipated - they've made a tremendous improvement over the yoga blocks I was using previously... I've got a subwoofer on order (BK Elec P10 150 Gem, made in UK) and that should arrive any day soon.

Since the Genelec monitors arrived I haven't used the Musical Fidelity M2Si amplifer, Q Acoustic 30350i floorstanding speakers and WiiM Pro Plus located a few metres behind me...

Another happy Genelec customer. Welcome to the club! I hope you enjoy them.

If you missed it, I added some detail about my Genelec system here.

Hi! Thanks so much for this great feedback and for taking the time to share all the details!

And most importantly, congratulations on the result! Getting the 8380s to work in a living room with all the compromises that come with it isn’t necessarily easy, and honestly, you should be proud of what you’ve achieved

I’ve personally loved the sound of the 8380s. They’re truly incredible speakers, and it’s really nice to see what they can do in a real world living room

I’m also really glad home theater maestro could be useful during your setup, especially for identifying room modes, early reflections and SBIR. The fact that you were able to identify the strong reflection on the back wall and then get such a noticeable improvement after treating it is exactly the kind of thing I love seeing the software used for.

And combined with REW and GLM, you have a really good setup for fine tuning everything

Thanks again for sharing your experience. It really means a lot to us. And now, enjoy those 8380s and your favorite albums!

The only Genelecs that I really like the look of are the white 2-ways on a stand. I think they look great. The rest not so much including the 'ones' which I have come to live with, but do not like.

Good 'unboxing evening' from Finland, Genelec club! I have been a Genelec customer since 2005. The launch of 8050A was the trigger for me to move into this sort of audio reproduction at home. At some point had also 8030As and experimented with 4 channel surround. Then 8351A, next 1237A, and today arrived what looks and feels like the end game.

My very first post here. Been following the site for a couple of years, appreciate the content and the friendly community.
