Genelec Owners Lounge and Discussion

I did one with just extended phase linearity on, that sounded good.

Big question. I think you are probably fine using GLM and then DIRAC live with a curve.

That said, I prefer to get my curve from a Wiim for a 2.1 system. It doesn't try to correct like Dirac will unavoidably. But for 4.2 you won't have that option so Dirac is probably fine. Just keep it under 300.

I know they are ugly and expensive but a genelec subwoofer with glm is a special thing. It can really dial in the phase.
Thanks Mort.

Yeah, the subs are not the prettiest things but I can imagine very much worthwhile. I do not think it will pass the wife test unfortunately. :-)

I think if they just change the front jail grill design + cover up the box, that would go a long way

My initial findings are that with one subwoofer and two large mains, GLM keeps pace with DiracART. I did put them together and found it made little difference. DiracART does have slightly better measurements, but it's subtle at best.

I keep blasting music going back and forth. The difference in SPL between digital and analog from a Denon x3800h is at least 20db.

Inspired by the recommendation to go immersive, I bought a pair of used 8341a for my rears in a 5.1 setup with 8361a mains. I'll use Apple TV, the Vanitypro digital processor, the 9301a bass management with my monitors.

As this will be 99% for music, and Atmos music mixes are light on the use of the center channel, I'm thinking of using an 8331a for the center. I would keep it crossed fairly high. Thoughts?

Wow, you dont muck around!
Are you putting in atmos/ceiling speakers. With atmos music content it does make a noticeable difference.

For a proper 5.1 you know you need another 8361a for center channel....

@Sancus can advise Genelec immersive strategies

I'm not right now doing height. I'll to leave that for another time. It would be so overkill to have another 8361a as a center. I literally don't have room.

What inspired me is I signed up for Apple music and played it around through my home theater and liked it. I'm interested in point source now.

Yeah, get what your saying.
I have a 5.4.2 setup with much lower quality speakers than my Genelecs, cheaper as well, that out performs my 8361a in many ways streaming dolby atmos music.

The pain is having to choose music through a TV screen with a remote.

I'm not sure what your budget is, but the 8351B is the best option for your scenario. IIRC, an 8351B in horizontal orientation has the best measurements (by a small margin) of the entire Ones series sans bass extension and SPL. If I could find a 8351B in black to match my 8C's, I would "downgrade" from my 8361.

It also packs enough punch that you could probably use it with ART.

Yeah, I think that's right, although I would take an 8361a if offered. However, I am limited in space, and cannot fit a five or six. I can do an 8331a or 8341a. I'm leaning toward the latter even though this channel won't be used a ton.

Yes that's really annoying. You can use a bluetooth keyboard to control the appletv, but I really wish one of the atmos streaming services would allow one to browse on a computer and just send a song to play from the streaming device and have the song play in full quality (lossless or atmos). There's no reason to require it to stream through the device via air play and lose quality. Plus none of them make it easy to find atmos tracks / albums. It really shouldn't be this hard.

My system is all 8351Bs. I passed on the 8361 because they are just too big for me to handle and still don't dig deep enough for me to use them without subs. So if I was going to pass the bass to subs anyway why deal with the extra space and weight of the 8361? The 8351 is small enough to easily work as a center in the horizontal position which finally let me have truly matched LCR. Going that route was the first time I've ever been happy with pans across the front stage.

I recently expanded to 7 base and 4 tops, all 8351B. I'm really enjoying the immersive experience for both music and movies.

4 tops, all 8351B
Wow! That's a lot of firepower for height. What if it drops on your head?

I hear that. Most folks that I know with 8361a + a subwoofer wanted to see if the 8361a would be good enough bass on its own and later discovered they wanted more. That's true for me, although the 8361a alone would cover 98% of my music listening without a sub.

They're on a steel gantry attached to multiple ceiling joists I designed so I could try them in different positions in both X and Y axes. The mounts for each speaker are cathedral ceiling mounts for large displays rated to 400 lbs and that's not counting the safety factor. So I'm not particularly worried about them coming down.

My experience with immersive audio is that its the wild west. Sound are placed all over by different artists/mixers. I really just wanted the system to match so it didn't matter where any sound was placed. Atmos in general suggests all speakers should have equal capabilities. The whole point is to be able to place any sound in any location.

Coupled with Dirac ART it gives me a lot of channel diversity for MIMO equalization as well.

You can control it with an iPad?

No unfortunately. It's apple music via Apple TV.
Which can be controlled from an ipad. I do just that.

The actions you make on the iPad simply appear on the TV screen. Its great and works well.

Gotcha. You asked it like a question. I don't use one and won't, but that was my understanding. I'm sure someone else will be happy about that.

Okidokee.
Just thought it might help to solve the remote control TV issue.

Isn't the issue that it still uses Airplay and not Atmos from the iPad? I don't know personally.
