Everywhere else is considerably cheaper, especially in Europe.

In addition, Genelec has gone out of their way to block any possible way for US residents to purchase abroad and have their products shipped to USA, but even if you could do it, shipping would probably cancel out the savings anyway

We have to pay top dollar for their speakers + taxed heavily by the government.

I had to pay $250 plus tax for some speaker stands that are half the price in Europe and not even made by Genelec

If you go to Thomman, Genelec speakers are considerably cheaper. They sell the Genelec 8030c for $535, but in USA is $695. That's a $160 difference for the same product. If you attempt to purchase it, you are welcomed by this message

"Sadly we cannot deliver Genelec products to your country of choice. Please consider products of a different manufacturer or switch to another delivery country."

Genelec is more expensive in USA. Revel is more expensive in Europe. Accuphase in more expensive in South America...

And so on.

That kind of thing happen when importers margins exist.

I'm visiting Finland early next year. Is there a good way to bring a pair of Genelecs home for a lot less?

I'm interested in the G series mostly, G two or three

The different voltage on U.S mains compared to Europe would be an issue?

A rare 20% black Friday discount on new Genelecs from Finnish design shop.

I am not affiliated but I did purchase.

Overseas manufacturers need to pay for shipping. Speakers shipped from overseas have always been much more expensive. Even domestic manufacturers need to take shipping into account. For instance the old Vandersteen IIc was made to be just under UPS max weight and size. When UPS increased the maximum shipping weight for standard fare (back in the late ‘80s) Richard Vandersteen made a new model with larger bass cabinet and weight to take advantage of the new UPS terms.

Essential aspects of their business like warehousing, distributor margins, and after sales service also are region specific and that often has unusual cost.

We are addicted to cheap goods in the US. I don’t think the Genelec price differences are remarkable. In fact, I find them more affordable than most audio, especially when you consider how good they sound.

That being said, I just chose between a wide range of Chinese KEF at 50% off MSRP. Apples and oranges, but they are from "another country".

Then just don't buy their product. There are plenty of other options. BTW, I got exactly the same message from Thomann trying to purchase a Steinberger bass. Supremely ironic, because Ned is an American. You just can't trust anyone these days. Next time I'm in Germany, I'll buy it there and then check it in as my luggage on the way back. Problem solved.

Are they really cheaper in Germany? Seems like they are identical price, give or take. The models I saw at Thomann are all manufactured in China, so cost is neither German or USA. Maybe I missed a model you are comparing.

IME this is the bigger factor.

Shipping is far from free, but back in my day when I was doing larger speakers over the ocean, it was only a few bucks a unit. If you are patient, shipping can be reasonable. Air shipping was a lot more.

I understand things have gotten worse since then on the shipping front, but dealer / importer margin can be 5-10%+ of retail, where ocean freight should hopefully only be 1-3%. I would expect the percentage cost to go up significantly for floorstanders, but for $1K+ bookshelf pairs I think that should wash.

A little cheaper, last time I checked. Another reason I buy from Thomann is that, at least in my experience, their service has been superb. I have received items from the Burgebrach warehouse to the US east coast, by UPS, faster than from the US west coast, and their reps and support are second to none.
